What did you do with your flock today?

I may end up having to get rid of two of my roosters. Their hormones are really starting to kick in this evening there were suddenly quite a few squabbles....and 4 in the same henhouse is likely not going to go well for much longer. I could keep two easily if I had one in each house. I hate to think about it because when they're free ranging, the extra roos add extra eyes for protection.

On the upside (I think), the roosters are starting to stand their ground against the bullyish reds. Until now all of the younger chickens including the roosters have been afraid of the reds and steer clear of them. This afternoon, I dunno if a roo was trying to mate one of the reds or just not take her crap, but it ended up in an actual fight. Another roo ran over to try to settle it (first roo ran off) and he ended up getting attacked by the red too. Only when the 3rd BL roo stepped in and cornered her in the small pen the ruckus had started in did she settle. She didnt exactly submit, but rather walked off like "it was my idea to stop fighting". Nobody actually drew blood, so all's well. Those reds (great egg layers that they may be) have always bullied everything here...even the guineas. Probably a result of being ex-battery hens. So I'm glad the roosters are starting to put an end to their crap.

I may end up having the reds become soup if they don't start behaving (tonight not one of them wanted to go into the coop for the evening and I was...well..I was ticked).

Well, roosters unite!
Utility Co has been upgrading stringing new lines and put a junction box infront of our house so plenty work going on. The boys have been driving back and fourth on our little road for the last few weeks kind of making a ruckus. Ya know, subcontracted from the mainland on a working vaca with an ocean view these human boys were pretty wound up. We have been graceful and polite despite them putting a fricken box out front. Well, today MY boys 🐓🐓🐓 did not like the guy working there and started crowing... ya know the crows- I want out, I want snack, MOM!!! The guy was obviously checking lines and coordinating with another and just as I walked out he was cussing my roos about THEM being to loud (3 boys were about 10 feet away lol). Hehehe. I let the guy know obviously they don't like you so close to their home and that we had been putting up with them for weeks and had no need to cuss them out. I did round them up so he could do his work but... some people! Hehehe 🐓🐓🐓

Absolutely. I thought it a good argument for you having multiple guard boys 😉🐓🐓🐓 All you and your girls gotta do is make it past the boys relentless ridiculousness the next few months 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Thank you for this. I really needed that encouragement. You have so much valuable experience with chickens. Do you think the boys will calm down and maybe get along...and be gentler on the ladies? My beautiful EE rooster seemed to attack one of the new ladies this morning. I "think" he was just trying to mate her and was extraordinarily bad at it. (grabbed her neck feathers and wouldnt let go until me and another rooster stepped in)

We have rain all day turning to snow in the afternoon through the night. So I did allow the young ones to leave the enclosure this morning, but after a few minutes of the rain all of them went right back in....except 3 roos. I let those 3 roos stay out with the reds as they do have several places to take shelter. Later this afternoon, I'll put the roos back in the enclosure, but having them all locked up together all day...even in the very large run... would likely not end well.

I love my chickens. I wish I could just WISH them all to get along and not get taken by predators.

I'm not looking forward to 3-9 inches of snow. Please let us have enough sun tomorrow that most of it melts away! 🙏🤞
