What did you do with your flock today?

View attachment 3241737
I was able to take the blanket off today and can hear the chicks being little happy chicks. Whew! Will put blanket back on this eve. Day 5 today.
LOVE glamping. 👇View attachment 3241749View attachment 3241761
Feeders are a hit and I feel WAY better about things. Plus I can move them in coop if need be because of weather. Yippee!

I have a question but gunna mostly aim it at @kurby22 but please anyone chime in.
I told you about my extra crower in the early mornings. I don't hear it every morning and I wonder if a hen is helping out Spider in the early morning mountain roll call cuz it is a little scary out here.
With that said, go ahead and dash my dreams. 4 months old 👇
View attachment 3241776View attachment 3241778 I don't see a boy clearly yet. 4 months old, no saddle feathers, no bleeding colors, no blotchy, no red comb or any wattles, no dorky behavior though I did see a small tiff yesterday between these 2. Maybe Spider has too tight of a ship 🤷‍♀️ But in all fairness Brahma x Ameraucana = slow to mature... and I have been fooled a time or 10 (at least lol) I have also owned 3 girls who have crowed but that was pre roo.
I've never seen a hen crow! Or at least never noticed? That looks hen to me, but I've never raised brahma and my ameraucana were years and years ago.

It is pretty cool. I have not figured the significance of it but have pondered a few things.
First, we have a bazillion wild chickens here so 1/2 a bazillion roos in theory. In the small hours of the morning you can hear the wave of crows, I call the grid. If there is a empty spot in this grid it gets filled shortly by a roo or up and coming roo. It was always tuff cookies that crowed. Not matriarchs but like a right hand bada**. So, I am not sure if this mountain is so big and wild that one of the girls is chiming in to make more of a presence. I know Spider is crowing a lot more than usual and it is only the horrible heat down the mountain that is keeping me up here... oh, well that and the harmony of the flock below lol.

I did hear a feral roo a little closer than I would like it to be. Beetle is not seasoned like Spider though he is very brave. He goes after the cats if they are too close and only the matriarchs do that lol.

Ooooh…while it looks like a pullet…that’s a pretty big pea comb for 4 months 🫣 being mixed with a Brahma might change things but almost all my pea comb pullets have next to no comb until POL at 6-7 months. I won’t say for sure…but I’d be surprised if you don’t see saddle feathers when digging around at the base of the back! I’ll be hoping I’m wrong!! 🥴🤐

Thanks miss @kurby. I think you are spot on and if I am gunna have my dreams dashed I am glad it is by you... and you let me down easy too! lol 😅
Well, I'm hoping he is a good boy and a beautiful roo as he is the grandkids pick and I am basically stuck with him taking up valuable chicken real estate lol.

Are those rats in there? Wow... future thanksgiving dinner for your flock? Imagine the football game that would inspire!

Brie is adorable! We had a little dwarf cockerel named Brie! Super super sweet and pretty. A neighbor I adore fell in love with him though so I let her have him. View attachment 3241795View attachment 3241798
I was going to keep him, but I know how good a life he'll have with her and I get to visit him every so often when I go over to chat. ❤️

Bet your Brie grows up adorable too!
Awww he’s adorable! It’s so hard for me to let them go, even when I know they’re going somewhere happy. I know this is my husbands biggest fear 😆 I will just be keeping ALL the animals. Hehe.

And yes, this family of rats is gutsy and enjoy cleaning up after the chickens. They also eat a lot of my chicken feed 😤 They’re little roof rats though, I’m thankful they’re not Norway rats! Those things are ginormous 😳 Friend of mine lost a serama hen to one last week. :-(

He is gorgeous!! And a mix of two very awesome breeds! 😍 I used to think black chickens were boring, but seeing them in person when the light shines off their feathers…they’re just SO regal looking! But I understand…chicken real estate is precious! But grandkids always win haha 😆

Thank yall for checking on me! It means alot to me!!!
Usually third day after surgery is worst...but not too bad today! Praying I don't forget and bend over...my neighbor that tends all my babies whenever we are outta town came over last night and brought the cochins back to garage brooder for me since I can't bend over n pick em up.
Sometime they will climb up on to my shoulders on their own...but probably not good idea to risk infection with them doing that.

I remember seeing the little chickens running around there... they're so cute! I didn't see any big chickens running free though...are all the feral chickens smaller birds? I'm still nervous as heck about letting the little guys out. That one tree we have is really a hawk magnet...think just because it's so tall. But so many places with feral chickens, it seems like the chickens run small.....

I'd sure love to see a hen crow! 😃

I am so glad we don't have to deal with rats! Or do we....🤣 O I want a chicken cam!

I'm so glad your neighbor is helping out. What a blessing!
This morning I half heartedly threw a flip flop in their direction and soundly cursed them for defecating on the porch again. They did not seem to care.
When our first three call ducks we're babies, they always wanted to hang out by the back door so they could greet us with a thousand quacks everytime we came out. What a mess!

I was gonna say too that those “mice” are huge!!! That kind of clean up would have to be my husbands job. Nope, no way! My dad bought a thing of straw once and get got into and there was a dead rat in it. Like the really big ones (I don’t know the difference) but it was like a mouse on extreme steroids. I never touched straw again after that. My mom said if there was ever a live one ever on our property, she would just move. Leave everything behind and move 😂 🤣
