Terrific you had a back up for the eggsHad a long power outage during the night. My incubators are hooked up to a battery backup so they were just fine, but the brooders weren't. Woke up to find one chick passed during the night. My backup has more outlets, so thinking about how to move things around so my brooders are near to the incubators and can share the backup battery. Poor little tykes must have been cold.
Windy windy day here. I can hear it howling around outside!
I have stood on his foot feathers before but never pulled any out... and such a big clump of them! I'm amazed i didn't really injure him. I did put ice on his foot straight away which may or may not have helped.Right there with ya...I accidentally step on poor Blueys feet feathers quite often! He's not nearly as luvin...nor mean...hence I never dreamed he was a boy until I couldn't keep saying he was a girl cuz of his huge comb and he finally crowed. He's quite shy with me still which I'll take...much better than ole bootyhead Joey flogging me nonstop. Bluey does take up for me and has been putting Joey in his place!
I'm the same. I'm with mine all day too as I also work from home (I do 1 day in 10 in the office - not my choice!) I'm sure my lovely neighbours think I'm nuts as I'm constantly chatting with the chickens as if they're people. Tbh, I get more sense out of the the birds.I have no idea.
It'd a daily occurrence from all of them now. I work from home and have medical issues so I'm always around them. I talk to them like they are human and invested. Lol
It's becoming a daily occurrence
I wish we had a facility like that! We have to use specialist avian vets and once you factor in taking the bird to the vet, paying a consultation fee then for the tests as well, it costs easily 3 to 4 times the amount you pay. The closest we've got to that is a worm count done by post (which I send off every 3 months - saves me a fortune in worming meds). It's called Research Associates Laboratory in Allen, Texas. They sell dry swabs and blood sample vials and you use the swab in their throat and vent, and then clip a toenail past the quick slightly and collect a small sample of blood. If you are testing for RNA type ailments, such as Mareks or AVL, you have to send overnight air which is the priciest part. Each RNA test is $25 and the others like Mycoplasma, botulism, etc. is $20. I highly advise selecting as many tests as you can afford so you spend the overnight shipping once, instead of twice! So this round I will pay $50 for the two RNA tests I picked (AVL and one other) and 5 other tests at $20, so $150 for the tests and then $70 for the overnight shipping. If you are NOT doing RNA tests, it doesn't have to be overnight. I was dumb and waited till Thursday to send (too focused on my coop) so I had to guarantee arrival by 10:30 am tomorrow so they can get to it right away.
Oooh, be careful! So the long story is there was a murder in Kalaheo and the suspect fled up to Koke'e. So I turned on the cameras at the cabin and I caught A rat. Guess I am going to have to listen to alerts until either the feeder is empty or they catch the guy....

Matilda was supposed to be a SLW hen. 'She' ended up being a Swedish Flower roo...And SLW's...
Yeah, a friend found them and I am soooo grateful. The last bird I had tested was through the avian vet, so on top of shipping and the test cost, I also had to pay for the vet visit. It's also sooo nice to test them before you lose them.I wish we had a facility like that! Naughty little rat! It's like it was taunting you haha.72...3, 4, 5 76 alerts on my phone from the rat. It only took the 11 o'clock hour off lolView attachment 3407963
@Gammas Bearded Babies I set the camera up inside the coop so it is nice and close but I do think Blink give me a pretty good picture. Obviously need to move or adjust to actually get the boys in the frame. Did not want to be to intrusive and not a lot of options up there. Need to go check on their water, hang their feeder and move camera today.
Our wild weather has made it to Kauai. Should be fun.
