What did you do with your flock today?

So... It's been flooding here... (This is unusual, for all that I'm in Texas. My part of the state is "high desert" and weeks of rainfall is not normal)
Anyway, I was baking cookies (cause what else do you do on a cloudy day?) And the birds start making a bunch of noise, so I pop open a door, and hear a kitten crying.
Checked my cats, they're fine. Put in shoes, run toward the crying... And it stops.... Can't find the kitten, and it's crying near the road, (which has several feet of water in drainage ditches right now) so I figure it ran off, or drown. Kick myself for being slow, and I go back to my now slightly burnt cookies.
... Lock up my birds at 9:30ish last night because thats when it was actually dark, get my cats their dinner... And hear the clarion call of a distressed kitten again. I managed to be slighty more sneaky, or the kitten decided I wasn't the devil... And it ran up a tree, but continued to cry.
My neighbor's now have a new kitten. Pretty sure it was originally some one's pet... So now it is again. Idk if it got dumped, but it was not in street cat condition.
Animals certainly ask for help.
One of my 8 weeker chickens asked to be carried over a puddle yesterday. They're definitely smarter than they get credit for.

Today, I removed the gate I had in place for the 8 weeker chicks to hide behind in the coop, as everyone seems to be getting along!
Checked the progress on the duck eggs I put under my chicken. This plan seems to have backfired. I now have 3 super broody chickens that all want to sit on eggs. Duck eggs are developing.
My previously well behaved girls are occasionally pecking at me... Cause broody. Chicken keeper life is more exciting than I was lead to believe...🤣
Great rescue! And one lucky kitten!

Well, it was super-Ferdy to the rescue again today. I was sat at the dining room table, next to the window and heard a soft thud. Next thing I know, Ferdy comes racing in to me with a tiny wren IN HIS BEAK!!! He dropped it at my feet and started making his 'the sky is falling in' panicked sounds. I picked it up, thinking it didn't look great but it soon came round in the warmth of my hands. In the meantime, Ferdy was perched on my shoulder, watching proceedings intently.
I took it outside and set it free. Ferdy was obviously happy with the result as he made his super happy noise. He sounds just like an old-fashioned whistling kettle!
Extra treats for Ferdy tonight, methinks 😂

That is incredible. Ferdy is a super hero ♡♡♡!!!!

@Maddcatter great job on the rescue ♡♡♡!!! And crispy cookies.

Welp. Chick did not make it to morning ☹️ . I thought it had a chance but guess I was wrong. Deep sigh***

Spent a large part of my day taking the string out of MANY, MANY feed bags. Held Hombre's rope as he got his feet worked on, back to bags, then set 4 traps for monster rat this eve. Iforgot to collect eggs again...

Hope won the broody battle. She is locked in the momma box with 8 eggs. Another deep sigh***
Rinse and repeat tomorrow.

I'm curious what kind of pox that poor baby had. I've only seen pox with little bitty lesions. That was the worst looking pox I've ever seen ☹️

You gave him a chance and that's all anyone can do. ❤️

As for hope...well, just gotta say beeeeeebies ❤️🤣❤️

I hope you caught the rat. I'm sorry your chick didn't make it. I honestly haven't seen dry pox, but even the internet pictures of it are typically no where near that bad.
At least the little dude had a comfy, safe place for his last day... And really, sometimes that's the best you can do.
I understand the broody battle. 😂❤️
Thank you for being you, whom makes the world a little brighter.

You're so funny ☺️💕

It was probably wet as it must have been in his throat and it was heavily mutated. I hope @Shetland lover chimes in. I thought wet was when it went inside and dry was outside, and health of bird made a big difference. I say this cuz I have seen an outbreak look different on birds. My birds look minor but a less kept bird, feral or my little FTT Manono, it became horrid looking, and potentially lethal. That's why I pump birds with vitamins. FTT Manono survived with impaired vision, though, I still think she is perfect ♡.

Well guys, the time has come. I had to say my last goodbye to Nohope this morning 😢😢 I don’t understand how he could go from starting to stand on his own and walk some with help to dead in two weeks time after 6 months of being sick…but here we are.

So R.I.P. Nohope, I will miss you so very very much. You were such a special boy and I will never forget you. 😢 I will miss your beautiful feathers you let me run my fingers through, the hugs you let me give you whenever I wanted them, how you would sit on me like you were a baby even though you weighed 8 lbs, how you yelled at me anytime I left your side, the gentle way you treated all the baby chicks that slept under your wings, and the way you LOVED French fries 😢💔😞 There will never be another like you. Your pain is gone now and I hope you get as many French fries as your heart desires. Goodbye sweet boy ❤️

I couldn’t make a sad face and a laughing face for this post. I’m so sad that baby didn’t find you sooner 😢😢 And it’s hilarious that Hope won the battle! 😆😆 Good luck catching the naughty rat!!

I would imagine that the dry pox was a severe case due to the baby’s lowered immune system from all the other things that challenge feral birds! Wet pox is mainly inside and attacks the wet tissues. I think even dry pox can get so bad that it gets in their eye tissues and sinuses. That case of pox was really advanced :-(
