What did you do with your flock today?

Been busy again. We are trying to get our Turkey house up and going. Our turkeys are growing faster than my husband anticipated, he doesn’t listen 🤣. But we also have something else going in with the turkeys. I’m so excited about them!!! My husband and I have talked about getting more too once these guys are outside and in it. They are in quarantine mode anyway so we aren’t in too big of a hurry for them. I’m sharing pictures that I received from the person I got them from and one from when we first brought them home. I haven’t had a chance to get pictures of them here yet. And of course the house for them. We have grass growing in the front of the house, so we are also trying to let that grow some.

I also don’t know how these 2 bunnies ended up at my house…🫣. My friend just said, hey you need bunnies, I will grab you extra bedding and food. And before I know it I have these cuties at my house. So far we believe there to be a boy and a girl. So they will be separated soon. But we really have about 8 weeks or so before we have to worry too much.

I had to pull out a couple of chicks today cuz momma was stepping on them and one baby ended up dying 😢😢 I’m glad your baby is okay ❤️

So now that the last baby hatched I removed 3 of the broody mommas so they aren’t so crowded. I am currently holding the last baby…not sure it’s gonna make it either. It got rushed out cuz the broody stepped on her after partially out of the shell and was literally standing on its head. 😫
I’m so sorry!!! I hope the little one makes it!!

Beautiful birds! 😍

I need a whole flock of just those.
Think you'd love them. They lay pretty good, love to brood, make excellent mothers and lay a huge egg for their body size. Well, most of them. I have a few that lay serama sized eggs. But it's easy to breed for egg size.

Here's a picture comparing eggs. I have to admit I picked the biggest dwarf egg and the smallest yoko egg for the picture 😄. But it gives you the idea anyway...on average my dwarf eggs are the same size to just barely smaller then my yoko eggs. The dwarfs are about the same size as oegbs...1-2 pounds max. Yokos weigh in at 3-4 and the alohas I had probably weighed 6-7.

Greenfire farms sells dwarfs. They're expensive but there's always the option to get eggs from them and hatch for a better price. They're a landrace breed and I've found them very healthy and hardy.

Editing to add their full name is Olandsk Dwarf

There were three more dang soft shell eggs under the roost first thing this morning! Could just be that their egg machinery is still working out the kinks. Stress maybe? I made some adjustments to their living quarters yesterday and I think they had some squabbles figuring out where they were going to sleep last night.

But I also got 5 nice eggs; 3 small, 1 large and one that I think was extra large.

I decided to put up another oyster shell tray in the chickens' "day run". I'm wondering if maybe some of the new layers haven't figured out the benefits of eating oyster shells. I do see some of the pullets eating oyster shells sometimes, but I don't know if all are.

I built another wooden box and mounted it onto the side of the coop so it's easily accessible to the birds during the day. Hope it helps my soft shell problem.

The chickens had over two hours of foraging yesterday evening. The pullets really seem to be taking a liking to their cockerel. He's acting protective, making warning calls when he senses a threat, and I think he's tidbitting some.

I hung an old plastic chic feeder with oyster shell in it as well as scattered some where they like to scratch and peck. I get very few soft shells but there is a difference in the age of my pullets. They are 11 months old now. I had a box on a wall like that for my convenience and they turned it into a pooping station for their convenience.

If I see one roosting on it I'll tack up a board so they can't get on it, but still be able to eat the shells.
