I’m missing my chickens tonight I am enjoying my work trip, but missing my birds.

Today we visited the ARS Grassland Long Term Research Station to talk about grazing on short grass prairie habitats. Pretty fascinating and resilient ecosystem. If you squint you can see Wyoming in the distance

Native, undisturbed grasslands are a rare thing these days. There's a National Grasslands reserve in SW Kansas I visited once. And I always loved driving through the Flint Hills of Kansas. Pretty country.

Well, my chickens didn't get any free time out on the range tonight. I just didn't feel like babysitting, watching for coyotes. And my chickens need to know who's boss, and that they don't always get what they want.

They got a couple hours of foraging last night, and while they were out I popped off a few rounds with my .22 rifle, just to let the coyotes know I'm a serious threat to be reckoned with. LOL

I've got 2-3 neighbors that have semi autos letting the coyotes know what the stakes are here for coming to close to farms. And one neighbor has several burros. I'd like a couple of burros. That's a win win. Less mowing and security guards.

I have an old Marlin bolt action. I think I shot 14 rounds total. I dont' have the space to handle burros, but saw some wild ones down in the desert in Arizona one winter when I was snowbirding.

I've got room to feed out a grass fed steer if I could get some fencing up. We've thought about running some goats with the chickens but it's harder to fence in goats that it is chickens.

I'd love me some grass fed beef. But with my place I'd have to settle for grass fed rabbits. LOL

l have tried grass fed rabbit but after getting rabbit hair on the meat I don't hunt wild rabbits anymore. Times aren't that hard now.

I've got an acre and a half that goats could clean up and then I'd have a place to run 500 extra chickens. Not sure I want to have to argue about when roost time is with that many at one time.

Got a nice surprise today. Velma laid a 76 g egg, up from 53 just yesterday. I hope that will be her normal size. The color seems more a mix of blue and brown, not quite "olive". We had 8 eggs. The Sapphire girls need to get some shiny new feathers, but haven't started yet.
