What did you do with your flock today?

... when your cat knows you have bacon...View attachment 3646347

Finished shoveling out the deep bedding in the coop today.

.... I made enough trips from the coop to the compost pile that the chickens decided to dig around in the compost pile. Lmao

Put up the 4 "walls" of the smaller chicken run. (That was mostly my DH and kid. I mostly played with poop).

And found out a sam's club flat of chicken breast smelled a little funky when I went to use it for dinner, so it's getting simmered in the crock pot to be used as chicken treats tomorrow.
Believe it or not, my two will not eat bacon! Parma ham, gammon, cured sliced ham... now that's a whole other story.

Aww, thank you! That will make her day as she tends to get overlooked in favour of her mom and auntie. They are very 'correct' bantam Cochin and do have show winning great-grandparents. Penelope has a huge personality though and has gone from biting my face as a youngster to being super affectionate. She used to launch herself at me when I opened the coop in a morning and latch onto my lip. It was somewhat painful so I'm glad we've got past that 😁

Roo or hen, your girl/boy is so pretty! I just love her colour ❤
Penelope sounds like a ham! Glad she stopped grabbing your lip 🤣

Oh wow! I can still remember her sitting with the sparrows. She looked barely larger than them.
I put her on high protein grower feed til her comb reddened trying to boost her growth. I think it helped. She's still really too small to get much free yard time...but she's just big enough I feel safer letting her play in the garden occasionally...shes a little easier to keep tabs on now. She sticks pretty close to me most of the time but she can go through regular size chain link still 😂

Still being lazy though I really should get back to regular life as I feel good...but I have enjoyed my little covid vacation 😂
Good excuse to just sit for bit with silly chickens 😁

When I took my hand away to try to get a better picture she almost rolled right off

Such a sweet chicken, I love pics like this 😍 If this is what you do with COVID you should say you still have it 😆❤️

Spent some time out with the chickens this evening. Gave them all some pumpkins! They devoured them 😍

I also determined I was right with my first guess on the white baby chick. He will not be a Spider after all. He will be half Brahma half Satin. He will be beautiful boy though 😍

Got a picture of my one lonely white d’Anver chick, she/he filling in quite nicely I think! Fingers crossed 😍

Such happy birds! I might try growing a patch of rye grass for the winter....it's about the only time grass grows easily here!

I used my cane for the first time out tending to the coops. For some reason that didn't set well with the Delaware hens. The flew all over the coop. Their coop is 16x14 and they made mess of things. I've had these girls since they were 3 days old and they know the sound of my voice. I always talk to them as I enter the coop. I think their crazy genes revealed themselves today. Once they all got out for their daily free range time they settled down but were still showing that they were cautious of me. Crazy hens.

I actually use a twig when I want to round the chickens up into the coop at night. Well, only occasionally. Usually they are in on their own, but every now and then there are a couple that are wandering around at dusk. For some reason they are concerned about the twig and just want to stay away from it. I have never hit them, or even attempted to. So strange. But I'm glad it works when I need it. I just tap it on the ground and that's all it takes.
