What did you do with your flock today?

There's a powder called Eight that contains permethrin that I use for cracks and crevices if I see mites or lice. If I don't see any then I just use diatomaceous earth in the crevices and it seems to me like an excellent preventative. Any permethrin containing powder or spray would do the trick though. Just be very cautious if you have cats because it can kill kitties. Safe and approved for chickens though!

Hope the tingling gone and the mites soon too!

The mites seem to all be dead, I've been checking and haven't seen any live ones. I think that was the only place that didn't get any DE when we put the coop together.
As far as the tingling, it comes occasionally, but at least my scalp doesn't feel like it has creepy crawlies. Thanks!

I read a long time ago that there is a type of mite that only comes out and bites the chickens at night, then goes back into hiding for the day. This guy had a video of actually eliminating them by capturing and destroying them. In his case, they were on the underside of the roosting bars. He put a piece of cardboard around the bar and left it until the next morning then took it off and there were all the mites on the cardboard. He did that a few times until mites didn't show up. He ran his finger along the bottom side of the roosting bar to see if there were mites there to begin with and they showed up on his finger.

So sorry you are having to deal with this. I am so fortunate to have not had an infestation in my 8 years of chickens. Not sure why. Every other bug lives here. lol But very grateful.

I believe these were those, and I could barely make them out, they were smaller than the tip of a pen. They were congregated where I found them, quite closely packed across the surface of the wood. The soap water killed them and the strays were sprayed the next day. Didn't see any more today. This is my first time with these buggers.

Yes! The love bugs just make your heart feel so content and peaceful. I so wish they were easier to have as house pets! I would just love a house chicken that isn't sick!! I miss hanging out with Nohope in his box on the couch but I don't miss the heaviness that came with it.

Molting is messy! Feathers are everywhere haha.

If only we could crack the toilet training, they'd make wonderful house pets. I've managed it twice out of 13 chickens, which ain't great odds. Stan is about 80% there but I don't think I'll ever be able to trust him to have the run of the house like I do Ferdy. Mind you, even if you manage the house-training, they can still be naughty house guests, as I'm sure you know!. Last night, Ferdy started helping himself to my toasted almond, fresh pesto and broccoli spaghetti! When I stopped him taking it out of the bowl, he nearly had his head bitten off trying to follow the laden fork into my mouth

We have been calling a rooster (young) just rooster that is in a kennel recuperating after he was nearly killed by older roosters as we didn't want to name him and then loose him. Today he looks like he is getting very strong and has been named Cogburn. He even has started snuggling with his human mama. He had all the skin and a lot of flesh taken off the back of his neck and some of his comb taken off. He would have been fried chicken but now he has a home as long as one of us lives.

I cried.

EWWWW 100s??? IN OCTOBER? Remind me to never live in Arizona hahahaha. I've been complaining about the forecast calling for 90 on Thursday. I want FALL weather dang it! Cold mornings, the smell of cool air, cinnamon apples, cozy clothing...summer is TOO long here! So, I have started some winterizing...but not as much as others. It's just been too hot still! Need to get ready for the rain though...cuz we will go from summer to relentless rain in the blink of an eye, and I don't want to be out in the mud and rain trying to put up tarps again haha...that is just not at all fun! I decided to take down the run that attaches to one of my Omlet coops and replace it with no-dig fence and bird netting before winter. The run has become a rat haven and for some reason the mud builds extra badly and then everyone is muddy and gross. Not gonna do that again! Gonna claw up the ground and wreck all the rat tunnels and remove a bunch of the dirt and fill it with Koop Clean straw. No more mud, I'm determined!

Good morning from CT! Fall is here for sure! Yesterday I cut a face in a pumpkin and the hens have been enjoying that. Puddering around the yard getting ready for the cold season! Actually, still working on a second coop that MUST get done. Waiting for a nicer day to paint some more

We were throwing a casual dinner party for some of hubby's co-workers once and one of the fellows just loved animals. Every chance he got he'd go outside and just enjoy them. Dinner time came and he took his plate outside to enjoy with the birds. I checked on him and he was having a blast eating and sharing with them. I told him just be careful because they can be pushy and headed back inside. Sure enough, a little while later there's a big commotion outside and when I went to check, there's poor Jeff backed away from the table because a bird was in the middle of his plate...not only chowing down but fiercely defending his right to do so.
I need to teach my birds better manners don't I?

I don't blame Ferdy. Toasted almond, fresh pesto (from the garden?!!), broccoli spaghetti!!! Sounds worth the risk of getting ones head bit off Totally die happy if you could get just one bite in... one pesto dripping noodle...
