I've got to see if I can get on my roost tonight. Hate sleeping sitting up. I didn't make it outside at all today and if my help shows up get a new coop up for more of the wayward kids that roost on top of other coops right now. Still need one more to divide the White Giants into two coops. Chicken math is crazy some days.

Well...I have a little chick that had something go wrong in the egg. At first I thought it hatched with one leg missing and since it was from a sibling hatching which is a no no, I thought it was my first genetic mishap. I don't usually breed siblings but this time was to try to see what recessive genes I have in my blues that produced only three babies in silver color...I've read silver looks can be caused by genes besides silver. But closer inspection shows it's whole leg is there, but disappears back into its body at the umbilical cord. I can feel the hard lump of its leg inside its abdomen on that side. For now it's strong and vigorous so I didn't put it down. I'm very uncertain how it'll do over the long run but think I'm going to help it try. It's leg enters the abdomen just barely past the elbow. I'm hoping it's leg will shrivel off at the elbow there and it's body will rebsorb or calcify the foot caught inside. I know that's possible...I don't know if it's likely though . But for now it's healthy and it very much wants to live. I named it Hopalong Cassidy. With all that white fluff it rather reminds me of the fellow who used to play the character.
Wish the little one some much needed good luck, and if anyone has any experience with one legged chickens I'd sure love to hear about them!

When Ma came in from closing coops she was met at the gate by Honey. Honey was on top of the gate in the middle and was coming with ma inside our coop. She got to fill her crop with cracked corn for the cold night out. She roosted on top of her coop instead of in it. She perched in trees before she was rehomed with us. We intended to take her out and put her in her coop but in the need for her safety and ours she's staying in a cardboard coop inside with us tonight. She's probably going to make a house chicken if we can make a diaper work on her. Her coop outside is in the background and the door is never closed. There is no ramp up to it and the legs are covered with slick metal so nothing can climb up to get in.View attachment 3682621

Metal legs. Genius! Now why didn't we think of that when we built our coop? Maybe it would have been cheaper than lumber was back in "cvd" days. Hope you can rehabilitate her, unless you want a house chicken.

Wait, where is your roost? Send a selfie when you get on it. All kidding aside, praying your ribs are healing and pain is lessened.

What lovely, nice perching moss padding you have. Mine don't eat the moss, but look for the bugs which hide within.

Yeah, I could not wrap my head around this one. Rather heartbreaking to read but know @ChicksnMore creates many a happy outcomes. One for the books forsure and I'm sure some serious learning no matter what.
