Some sad news. Olena passed away while we were away. Her care giver didn't want to tell me until I went to pick her up today. She felt really bad, but we all know how suddenly chickens can die. Thanks for everyone's support on this journey.

I’m so sorry @PopoMyers She had all the love and best care a chicken could ask for from you, I’m sad for you and know exactly how you feel after all the work and time and hope…it’s so hard to say goodbye to them after all that. Hugs to you friend

I did the usual with feed and water and egg gathering. Then I took time to walk around with a few slices of fresh bread for the free ranging vagabonds. I break it into small pieces and let them take it from my hand. They have me trained pretty well now. If I don't have something for them they surround me and stay underfoot until I go back inside and get something for them. The more senior roosters get the first handouts and then the junior boys come up for theirs. There are only 3 Ancona pullets that aren't in a coop yet so they get a few pieces too and then they run and hide from the boys. I know they don't hide all the time because their eggs are fertile.

I'm sorry you lost her . I'm certain she couldn't have gotten better care anywhere though. She got the pleasure of being pampered when she couldn't have the pleasure of a healthy body anymore....sometimes that's all you can do. You gave her a real shot at recovery.

So sorry @Popo . You did a terrific job with her and I am positive learned a bunch for your many efforts. She had a beautiful and loved life. Rest in peace Olena

Meanwhile, the rest of the girls, who were kept under lockdown for safety while we were away, were let out after 10 days. The grass has begun growing, so they were quite happy. A mysterious chunk of rice was out there, too, to their delight.

My flock is well and perfect and demanding and still perfect. Cute things that happened for me to witness. Second feral showed with her brood and introduced them to the flock. Super cute and a big todo for us all. They have over 20 chicks between the 2, plus the random 5 plus other random and abandoned I am now caretaking. Plus 2 feral broodies in my boxes. One just bites the crap outta me when I collect eggs.

I've been so kitten smitten that I haven't gotten much done in a while ...but the babies are almost 5 weeks, and while they're reluctant about weaning, they can go much longer between feeding now so it's time to get outside...renew my garden beds, do some planting, clean the chickens nest boxes and get the pea nests ready.

I did a little experiment with my flock this afternoon. I gave them a mix of interesting food. In order of preference:

1. Mozzarella cheese shreds (fine)
2. Green grapes
3. Bartlett pear bits
4. Canned green peas

The cheese and the grapes disappeared in the initial feeding frenzy, and then the pear tidbits followed. The peas were still on the tray until Naomi started eating them, then some others decided to investigate. All food was gone within a minute.

Mine absolutely devour both cheese and grapes too - although the grapes have to be red or black. My lot spoilt? Never!
They get frozen peas a few times a week, which go down very well - never tried canned.
But pears? You'd think I'd tried to feed them arsenic!
