What did you have to learn the hard way? (management stuff)

I learned (30 seconds ago) that a chick sitting on your shoulder and screaming loudly can make you go temporarily deaf.

That broody chickens ferment poo in their bodies to use as biological agents to deter candling attempts.

Chickens never read the Geneva Convention.

Also, don't let flighty birds on your shoulders or they'll fly and tear up your back.
Don't assume that other people will take care of your birds like you do (Remembering to feed, water, let out in the morning, and Close Up At Night).

We learned that when we first got the chicks (feb 09) we set up a brooder in the dinning room....we did not really use this room. Well the mistake was all the chicken dust......It gets EVERYWHERE. Even in places that I thought was impossible to get in (glass cabinets). So we are working on a brooder room, we use it to store feed, scratch, and the stuff we lay on the coop floors, ect....

WARNING: I never knew so MUCH chicken dust came from such SMALL chicks. LOL

Even a few chicks can make a big mess. If you keep chicks in the house eventually your spouse will notice them because of the smell.

If you want a chicken coop built, just bring home some chicks and set them up in the living room. Then tell Hubs you don't know if there will be space on the couch for him when they are big enough to jump out of the brooder.
