Since this post is from yesterday I qualify to respond (and brag a little)! lol
Yesterday for the very first time I killed, scalded, plucked (okay, our homemade Whizbang plucked but I held the hose!), and eviscerated chickens! We were helping my inlaws with their flock in practice for our upcoming pastured flock. I lost count since they weren't our birds, there were 4 of us and I was focusing on my techniques at the evisceration table but there were about 24 cornish crosses that we processed. I nabbed the first one I cleaned and it's in my fridge- trophy dinner!!! It was weird to take a life, (lives) but somebody was going to do it and at least I tried to be kind about it.
Went home exhausted; I was up very early and ran our farmers market booth all day prior to processing. When I finally got scrubbed up and closed my eyes to go to sleep all I could see was chicken guts. I must have made progress in overcoming the squeamishness because for some reason that didn't disturb me nearly as much as one would think. I guess I'm more or less a real chicken farmer now! I figure "graduation" officially comes July 10th when our flock is ready for processing but I'm confident that it won't be too big of a deal- I've been very dilligent and proud of my ability to not get attached to the meat flock.
