what do chcikens need to dust bathe in?

i have 15 RIR and i put a bucket of dirt in there but they dont get in it to dust bathe. so do i need somthing else?

Sand or stove ashes are best and lots of it. I brought in a truckload of sand and put 12" deep in my run. they eat it and bathe in it. I scoop the poo out once or twice a week with a litter scoop. Works great and they get their daily baths

It's probably the size of the container that's the problem, not what's in it. Dump the dirt out of the bucket onto the ground.
