So we looked in the coop with the moms today and there was an egg with half of the hard shell missing but its still covered by a soft white membrane (I think.) What do I do? We moved it to the box with the two other chick. I am scared it will get dried up under the lamp. Should I remove the membrane? Should I cover it with a moist towel? I need help.
Sorry for posting so much, I have never had have to help chicks so I am lost.

How close are they to hatch? If they're just starting out it's possible to save it but it's gonna have all odds stacked against the poor little thing. If it's really close to hatch then wrap it with a damp paper towel, cross your fingers and keep a very close eye on it!

Its almost like the moms broke the egg shell off of it. I don't get it. It hasn't hatched or pipped. We have one egg that has a beak thru it but we are leaving it alone. If the one that has half of its shell missing doesnt break through by tomorrow should we assist?

This is the egg.

It looks really dry and leathery. Do you have an incubator? If so, mist the egg with a spray bottle, wrap it in a damp paper towel and place it in the bator. That's the best thing I can think of. :/
