i have a turkey egg with a dime size hole after pipping yesterday. its been about 28 hours sense the pip started. u can see his eyes blink and always moving his head. membrane is dry but i keep wetting it. why wont he just finish coming out? do i help or what? his hatch date was yesterday. please help i've already lost 3.

If he's made the pip hole bigger by himself then I'd guess he's strong and he's really trying to get out. Sounds like it might be too dry for him to turn and zip. Either that or he's too big to get himself moving in there. I've never hatched turkeys but I'm assuming the helping procedure is roughly the same as for chickens.

Bator into warm damp room, egg out, pick away very small bits of the shell very slowly and carefully, moisten the membrane with warm water as you go, (a wet q-tip is good for this as you have to be careful not to actually drip water on the beak in case the chick inhales it and drowns) and if you see any blood stop immediately and put the egg back in the bator for a few hours, wrapped in a damp washcloth.

If you decide to help, good luck!

It has been experience hatching turkeys that when they create a large round hole, rather than actually turning and zipping they can't turn. Good luck, I would help at this point.

Keep him warm and wrapped up; you could try dipping the beak tip on Poly-Vi-Sol or Chick Saver if you have it.
