what do i do now? UPDATE

Regarding cats and chickens: Our two female cats are great friends with our chickens, and our boy has never tried to hurt any of them. True, when the chicks first got to go outside around ten weeks, they were a great attraction to the cats and they would watch them through the fence. They may have half-heartedly stalked them (through the fence), but they never actually caught one. My aunt says that her cats were afraid of her chickens after they were full-grown.

Our cats are barn cats, and are not declawed. Both have caught songbirds and all sorts of little creatures, but they've never once harmed a chicken.

Oh – and my Dad is allergic to cats. So they just stay outside, year-round. We have several outbuildings that they can get into and they are quite fine, even throughout our FREEZING winters. A few days ago the nighttime low was about 25 below. I'm sure the sweet kitty will be fine in your porch for the night.

I hope you can find the owner, if she's lost.

I was wondering, though – is it a tomcat?

If it's a tomcat, then it may just be passing through on his way to find a wife.

We've got two unspayed females, and somehow the boys always know when it's time to come calling. I think we have at least six different toms that come to our house when the girls are in heat, and we live in the country, too – I only know who one of the toms belongs to, but the others I have no idea where they come from. And then they leave again, after a few days, and we don't see them for months.

So it's possibly that, if it's a tomcat, that he isn't really lost.

Call your local newspaper. Most will place found pet ads for free. Also call the humane society back to see if anyone is looking for her. She might be a house cat that slipped out of someones door.
Your chickens should be fine. Cats don't usually bother chickens unless they are feral and half starved. Chicks are a different story though.
Nice of you to get her in out of the cold. If she is declawed she is probably a house cat...chances are that she is spayed too. You can post a pic of her on Craigslist too.
Good Luck!
