mine go after scabs something fierce. They aren't "being mean" or hornery, they're just being chickens. Even the barred rock that got my eye once. She was just being a chicken.
I just love to pick up my hens. So far the RIRs all love to be held the most. They titter when I pick them up like, "Oh shucks.. you got me, but i wasn't really trying." My EE'rs are a little easier to get, followed by the BRs, and lastly the wine-dotters. They're darn near reclusive.
My 'inherited' rooster is a hoot. He never bites, ever. Unless you're one of the new hens. He goes after them all the time. At night, all the hens try to get on teh roosting bars before he waddles his big old butt up to the perches because he sleeps right on the end and none of the other hens can get up once he plants his carcass in front of the perches.
I like to go mess with him when it gets dark enough. I know he doesn't like me very much but I like to pick him up and rub his ears, play with his comb and pat his crop.
