Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out some of the polish threads, ie https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/355316/polish-thread By dust they usually mean how they treat the birds (paying particular attention to their crests) if they actually have lice/mites, they usually don't do it as a preventative. People usually use poultry dust (permethrin or a relative as active ingredient, can get it at most feed stores) or Sevin dust, some people like to use something like Ivermectin topically. Some people do like to have DE in their dust bathes as a preventative.

Crests on polish tend to get into the water bowl when they bend forward to drink. If you could teach them to use nipple waterers, that would help keep the crests dry. If you powder them to treat or prevent mites and lice, having their crests bob in water, will end up them drinking mite powder.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I too have polish and I agree with Kelsie & drumstick diva on the advice they have given you. I don't dust my birds crests as a preventative measure but I do check in the crests and around the eyes very regular to make sure nothing is in there. This is where it really helps if your birds are tamed and you can easily pick them up to check. Good management also of your coop also helps with lice and mites. Regular checking and treatment of any mites really helps keep them at bay. Also with the water a nipple system that's a great idea. Or if you can't do that a thin lipped chicken waterer is best to keep the crest dry. I wouldn't use an open waterer as they get soaked with them.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your new polish, they are a super breed to keep and lots of fun.
Enjoy BYC :frow
