what do i need in advance for delivery in goats

What supplies do i need to have on hands when my goats have thier babies. ?

I always have:
Puppy Pads and towels- to catch and dry babies
Betadine- to dip navels
plain floss- to tie off navels if they are too long
Scissors- to cut long navels and floss
lube- if I need to assist
Nose/mouth suction- if they need their airway cleaned out
instant heat packs- if its cold to help warm babies
Molasses- to add to the water for momma goat

I think thats about it, and I just try to intervene as little as possible.

I would also recommend a baby monitor system ( I got a fisher price model from walmart) helps when you are expecting and can get out to the barn during birth if in the middle of the night and also after kids are born if there is any distress i.e. mom accidently lays on baby. I also recommend a handy kidding kit.. I keep my supplies in a medium sized plastic tub with lid so I can just grab it and go.

I also keep on hand some nutridrench to give kids a squirt after they are dried off.. I also have tubes of Selenium e gel and goat colostrum gel that I use. good alfalfa hay for mom along with warm bucket of water and lots of love, I use naval dipper with low sting iodine and coat whole cord and under belly attachment area or an old 35 mm film container works good too.. plenty of clean towels, those just in case items would be a stomach tube for feeding emergencies, cell phone and vets number ready to go for emergencies and of course a camera for newborn photos!!! and don't forget lots of anxiety, panic and then of course swooning over the cutest things ever- baby goats.

The gel is not as good as the real thing but works in a pinch.. plus it has some beneficial bacteria and dried colostrum in the product.. I believe mom is best but a little supplement never hurt.. I just purchased a couple tubes through valleyvet.com not sure about shipping and such to Canada though.. check out their website..

you need all the supplies above and the vet on speed dial just in case. last wensday night I had to call the vet at 11.30p.m. , one of my first timers womb had to be put back in.

Hopefully you won't need any of these things....You will go out to the barn in the morning and find a new kid; dry, standing, and nursing.
I always keep a few dry clean towels in the barn none the less.
