F1 is first filial generation, F2 is second filial generation, etc. Basically the numbered generation of a breeding project. The chicks from the first cross are F1s. Their offspring would be F2s.

Split is used with recessive genes when they are in a heterozygous state (only one copy present). You know the gene is present because of breeding records, but it cannot be seen in the bird. Black split to lav means the bird is black and carries a hidden copy of lav. In genetic shorthand, it is Lav+/lav.

What else?

thats brilliant just what i wanted to know

:)

been looking at these gene codes and so much to learn its overwhelming
