What do y'all keep your oyster shell & grit in?

I have two dishes screwed to a scrap of plywood on the coop floor near a feeder. The "dishes" are the bottoms of plastic soda pop bottles.

I would never add either item to their food. They will take what they need, which may be little or even none. Some of my chickens use the grit and oyster shell a lot more than others, from what I've seen.

Use the same myself. Minus the top

I've tried keeping the grit in dishes, dog bowls, etc. raised up on a board, but they just get knocked over or pooped in. I think I will eventually get one of those feeders that you can hang on the wall. Would love to see what others use.

I thunk that bag down in a corner of the coop and rip open the top....and let the chickens worry about distribution. Nothing goes to waste and they get to self-regulate...and I don't have to do any work regarding their supplements.

i use a small chick feeder , one of the long aluminum ones with like 20 holes in it, off to the side they seem to get it when they want/need it and it stays clean. i had the feeder left over from brooding the chicks and figured id put it to use

Hi! I have two feeders in my coop, and they sit on crates, so they're right up at beak level for my chickens. Anyhow, about twice a week, I just sprinkle a handful of oyster shell on top of the crate around the feeder that sets on it.

They seem to eat it up like candy.

I have a small hanging feeder just for oyster/egg shells. Their run is large, and they free-range from 3:30 until they go to roost, so I have no need for supplemental grit. Here in NW AZ, not much vegetation covers the ground, and the soil includes a lot of grit-sized particles.

Same here. Why trick them into eating something they don't need?

Initially I wired a pint yogurt cup to the run wiring for the oyster shell, after punching a hole at the bottom for the rain water to drain out. After a couple of years, that got brittle and broke, so I built a small wooded container and hung that from the run fencing. That's only for oyster shell. They get grit from the ground when they free range. I did get a bag of pea gravel and dumped that just inside the run gate and in front of the coop door because of the mud. When they are stuck in the run, they have all kinds of grit available.

In the brooder, I hang a small yogurt cup from the side for grit. No oyster shell for them, obviously.

I fabricated a custom feeder with 2 attached containers out of sheet metal. I have a picture on mypage. T
Is all available free choice
