What do ya'll think about composting?

Unless you only desire to compost kitchen waste, prefab compost bins, seem like a waste of money. The simplest method is, literally, a pile...Raked leaves; mulched, if possible, cut grass, pulled weeds, chicken manure or whatever is available, and kitchen scraps...The chickens will rummage through it, and find what they like. On top of that, they'll keep it stirred up.
If you feel a need for containment, concrete blocks, stacked up, or old pallets, nailed together, will do fine.

We love to compost....I'm not bragging but my DH is featured in the Tractor Supply magazine standing up on a pile of compost about the size of our bedroom....

We full time farm and that compost is everything to our garden and to our vegetables.... I wish I had a link to share but it's in the last issue.

Composting saves landfills as well!

Happy Easter!

We love composting! It's not stinky at all. At one point our bin was so full I found myself tossing items that we would usually compost. It's amazing all the stuff you can put in there. It's been a fabulous task that I would recommend to anyone who's got the space to do it! And it doesn't take hardly any space or time.

I go through 16 loaves of bread a week ......

The horse manure goes out back to compost and gets used where it's needed after its all broken down. For the house and garden waste that the chickens can't eat I put veggie waste into my worm bin. It's not too large and very easy to manage. I prefer wooden bins over the plastic and I choose not to collect the worm tea. I just don't need it so I let the bin drain back into the ground and I like how the wood bin can breath better than plastic does.

Here, we compost everything. Food scraps, chicken poo, horse manure, rabbit poo, and when we pluck chicken and shear our sheep, it all goes in the compost pile. I love to garden and grow flowers so the compost sure beats buying ferterlizer. (and way cheeper).

We compost here! Love it!! No meats or oils though! They'll go rancid. I your compost stinks, something is wrong. It should have a sweet, earthy smell to it. Piles work great for compost, but you want to use a container, a simple trash can and pitch fork works great. For quicker composting, toss in some earthworms.

alright well ya'll have made up my mind! I'm going to talk my husband into making a wooden one. I was going to just go to Lowe's and buy one but it would be a whole lot cheaper and probably better to just make one ourselves. Plus I was reading reviews on their composters and they weren't very good. We're mainly just going to put kitchen scraps, weeds, and chicken waste in it. Maybe even shredded paper from the mail. Yay another project lol! thanks everyone!
