Ok. So this is my first year with bantams, & I really wanted to get some Blue & Splash Silkies but didn't want to order 25+ chicks, so I found this guy on craigslist, & drove over an hour to get there & got caught in traffic for an additional 45 minutes due to a wreck on the I20 in order to get these lil guys. (Yeah, I got it THAT bad...LOL) So when I get there the guy & his wife are older & real nice, he shows me his breeding pens for the different Silkies, set up very nice & clean without any fence-hopping possible it looks like. Not super show winners but nice, nonbearded cute Silkies, supposed to be purebred. I go to see the chicks & I was a bit in a hurry by then due to running an hour late because of that wreck, my kids are out in his yard trying to get into the mule pen, hollering about needing to pee, you know, with all the usual charm of children, & so I'm trying to be thorough & check all the traits for each one & compare them throughout these DOZENS of blue chicks of various ages trampling each other in the brooders....so I get 7 so I'll be sure to get at least 1 or 2 hens, I hope. Whatever. 1 was like a day old (supposed to be black), a few were like a week maybe (splash & blue), & 3 were 3 weeks old (2 splash/blue, 1 buff). Ok, so we finally get home with much moaning & peeping the whole way....Fast-forward to this week. They are now 3-6 wks respectively, & man, are things looking odd. Strange things are DEFINITELY afoot at the Circle K!

One of the blues has a single comb? The buff has blue spots, amber eyes (my bad for not catching THAT!), & is getting reddish wattle spots...One of the blues has 1 foot w/ 4 toes (my bad!), NONE OF THEM seem to be getting much of a crest, really nothing there to even mention, & the little tiniest one??? Developing feathers now & NOT A ONE is Silkie style! All barbed! I mean , I'm just wondering should I call/email the guy & be like was there some kind of mistake?, or WTH?! or April Fools! you got me?!

I don't expect to get $$$ back, but I mean, this is ridiculous! I'm really disappointed about it. And when I go to rehome some of them, what the heck do I list them as, Silkie Surprise???

Erggggg...Any thoughts, advice or something to uplift my discombobulated bubble much appreciated...

I think the mixed breeds are some of the coolest ones to watch. Sorry you didn't get what you expected. Maybe you can find someone like me who just can't say no to the offer of cheap or free chickens. In the meantime, get a chair and your favorite beverage, sit down and enjoy a few relaxing minutes watching your "odd" chickens. I love starting my day doing that and try to do it twice a day on weekends. Considering all the hustle, bustle, and stress in todays world that kind of relaxation time is more precious than gold.

The first two pictures do look like Silkie chicks. the supposed black, no. The red that I saw on your photo page, more like a red cochin frizzle. What else did he have there?
Yes, it is your bad for not checking more closely, but I fully understand and appreciate your dilemma. I would advertise Silkie mix and bantam frizzle on the two and see if someone will take them. I say, variety is the spice of life, but I am crazy and have about 25 breeds going.

I have also experience the similar situation with kids. Aren't they just enough to make you feel humble?
Good luck.

Yeah, we want to keep our lil Frizzles, but you know, there's only so much room in the pen, so the mixed-up guys would be the ones to go, if any. We did get some white & 1 partridge that look right though. They were from another source. I just wish I'd stayed here in town & took my chances on the feather-footed bantam asst. @ the feed store that came in the same week, but I thought I was going to be smart & get me some blues...

& I think you're right about them being fun to watch, & I totally enjoy sitting out there with them but there's @ least 4 roos just in the mutt bunch alone! I got them thinking that they were pure & would be easy to rehome if need be since they are blues, & no one has them around here, hence my roadtrip...My next-door neighbor gets his panties in a wad about ANY noise in the neighborhood. We're talking the country here, but you'd think he was Mr. Suburbia of the Neighborhood Association over there! Anyway, I want to keep only the coolest roos, of course. I might keep the buff/blue with the amber eyes just because he does look kinda striking....I was hoping to do a bit of incubator exploration next year, so wanted to use the best of what I've got, I guess. We also have a little mystery roo from the feed store, our original standard blue Cochin, & I think 2 of my 3 oldest white Silkies are going all bumpy combs on me...The partridge Silkie's a roo too. I'm hoping no more bumpies come up...Thanks for the input!
