What do you do about DUST?

i dont mind the dust ON stuff as much as I dislike it floating around in the air. Most often its only in the morning before i let them out in the run, or in inclement weather where they are scratching around inside. I dont throw scratch in the litter anymore. I'd rather turn it myself. haha. but I doubt that actually stops them from looking and scratching anyway. I usually have a decent enough breeze to air it out quickly with barn doors opposite a house type door in my 12x20 shed/coop. As far as whether its hard on their respiratory, they sure do like to stir up a dust cloud rolling around in the dirt in the run!

OK

I have a fan in the window, tied to the ledge
In the summer, I keep it turned so that the air blows in
In the winter, I turn it around so that the fan PULLS the air out, with that, it pulls out all the dust and keeps the air clear. I keep it on for a little while, not all day, too cold

I have a wet/dry Vac I use a silk cover for my filter, then just shake out & wash it.
I never thought of using in the coop however I use it in my Avairy room in the house for my Parrots.

lol -Learn something new (semi-new) everyday...Don't know why I didn't think of that......

I use a dust mask when it is worse than usual. My SILKIES are in run in garage still as coop not finished. I broom sweep several times a daand replace some shavings where needed. My garage is coated .I have 2 windows open daily and closed at night time. I use the DE(2%) they (2 of them only)decide to dust bathe send it all over . I use the recommended 2% DE of the applied pine shavings . It is in their small litter pan aka dust bathing ,roosting and occasional poop bin lol. The pine shavings are cleaned out daily half the runs at a time and brought outside immediately. It seems like my girls watch and wait for me to do my chores and the fun begins. "Oh let's see where we can send the pineshavings and DE around and watch mommys look of displeasure"...lol. Chickens can be "pigs" ..gotta love em!
