What Do You Do If...

I only have mammas hatching chicks (no incubator)
This is now the third time I have had to have them inside in the bathroom due to unforeseen cold temps ... mamma is in there with them (I let her outside in the morning the first week (all she wants to do is to go back to her chicks but she does manage to do her poo and and eat a bit) and then put her back with the chicks...her time spent outside is progressively longer and now at four/five weeks she stays out pretty much the whole day and then comes in at night with them...
The chickies are attached to me as well with this system... they stay warm as I have them next to the radiator in the bathroom and a wet towel hung to keep the humidity up...
At this age I will be glad to have the weather straighten up so they can go outside and enjoy the yard.

Aww I miss broody hens!

(Still waiting for my chicks to arrive...eck)

Silkies are pretty neat chickens. I preffer heavy breeds ('cuz I'm an egg freak) but I've had silkies and they're the sweetest chickens. When you hadn raise them, they're super tame and friendly, moreso than any other chicken I've had. Their feathers are also awesome...and they go broody really easy. If you don't have an incubator and want chicks, you can always stick a few other eggs under a broody silkie girl.

I have a muscovy duck that used to hatch baby chicks (since we had a rooster, but no male duck for her). I've got to find those pics...cutest thing ever.
