I'm kind of new in the chicken business and noticed my 2 largest hens were doing this, so far. I had no idea why or what they were doing, but out of instinct, we would pick them up to love them or scratch their backs. Good to know this was what we needed to do. They are almost 4 months old now. I love every minute of this and have been keeping a "chicken diary" since they were little peeps and this will def be an exciting new entry! We are having so much fun with them, and they love us too! We have been picking them up and loving them as much as we can. I thoroughly enjoy our peeps and learning about them thru this forum, thank you! It has helped so very much!! No book can get you this much detail. Happy Clucking!!!
P.S. And I have no roosters......yet.
P.S.S. I got home from work today and found our first 2 eggs!!! They are only 15 weeks old and was not expecting this at all! although we have had the nests built in the coop for 3 weeks, they layed the eggs on the floor, but nestled very snuggly in the pine shavings, in a clean area. Just the 2 eggs side by side! I think it was Henrietta & Rosella or Ginger that gave us the eggs today! Awesome!
