All of our chickens free range (while we are home) and we supplement with layer pellets, except for one lame bantam rooster. We keep him in a chicken tractor because he only hops on one foot. I don't know how he'd survive an encounter with either of our other 2 roosters without a screen in between!

Anyway, I'm sure layer feed is not the right thing. What do you suggest feeding him instead? I imagine the other 2 roosters are getting plenty of other things when they are ranging so I'm not as concerned about them.

Thank you for any suggestions!

I keep all my lame animals too! I feel they are not throw aways, so they live their lives out woth me as long as they are not in pain!
I would give him scratch feed and some veggies, bird seed, just anything his little heart desired!! He should have some green tho. Some people do not give scratch feed, but I always have!~

If you want to give him something different, you could just give him grower, but I dont think the extra calcium is gonna hurt him, all my roosters eat the layer with no problems.

Thanks, patty and marlin! I'll keep on giving him layer feed and supplement with veggie scraps, etc.

Junkman, I'm keeping him because we just can't bear to kill a chicken if we don't have to. This little guy is as fiesty as he can be and ... that's it. We had to put his little hen down. They were given to us a couple of months ago and were already beaten up when they came to us. They'd been kept in a pen with a full-sized rooster.

We tried to rehab the hen but she could never put any weight on either leg; never even tried. She would eat when i fed her and was alert and bright- just couldn't support herself. We hand-fed her for 3 weeks just in case she was only in shock or weak- we couldn't find anything physically wrong. But she never was able to stand up on her own.

After my husband killed her he swore he was never going to kill another chicken.

I have a lame hen that has one good leg, but eventually started moving around on both "elbows". She can run as fast as the other hens, but she has her own pen!

I have a Rooster that's in rooster jail until he is dispatched in about 2 weeks. He's a real Butt Head. He attacks everyone and everything. But I'm making the rest of his life as happy as I can. I'm feeding 28%turkey starter mixed with cracked corn. He loves this 50/50 mix. He's putting on weight which is something I want. I also throw him a couple big handfuls of meal worms in the morning and the evening. Every treat the rest of my flock gets, he gets his own portion. after 2 weeks in the pokey he doesn't even try to get out. I can open the door. leave it open, tend to his feed and water and he just watches me. If I'm on the outside of the fence then he tries to attack me through the fence. But, Yeah, Seems to like high protein food and cracked corn.
