I just had some bobwhites hatch and was wondering what everyone else fed theirs. Ive been giving them non medicated chick starter, is that ok? Thanks!!

I am feeding mine medicated game bird starter now. I started off feeding them chick starter and they did fine. Then I found a small local feed store that could get me the medicated game bird starter, but here is the problem, I could only get it in 50lb bag and so my birds should really be off of the starter by now but I am still using it because I do not want to waist it. It takes a long time for 12 birds to eat that much food.
The crumbles with both kinds seemed to be a little large the birds seemed to have a hard time with it when they were young, so I started running the feed through my food processor to break it up a little more and then give it to them, that did a lot better. Then I started mixing the chopped up feed with non-chopped until they were big enough to just eat the crumbles. Hope this helps.

I feed mine Nutrina Game bird crumbles it is 28% protiene & they do good on it. I put terramycin in the water during hot weather & it seems to cut the infant deaths to nearly zero. Keep them warm & out of drafts.

Hey, I am not sure how the chick starter is successful for the Quail, because mine died when I first started raising my birds. (but I could have done something else wrong, like not giving them enough heat or something...) I have a great recipe for quail starter, ready?

1- mix 1 chicken egg to a cup of rabbit food, moisten with water.
2- Wait 30-min for the rabbit food to absorb the water
3- Microwave the mixture for 2-min
4- add chicken starter or gamebird starter (about 2-3 cups)
5- add a cup of bodybuilders protein
6- mix this in a food processor.

The birds fed on this high protein meal grow super fast and are flying in one to two weeks!

I Dont Recommend Chick Starter For Quail Babies--- It Can Cause Constipation And/or Pasty Butt And Make Them Die. Also It Doesnt Have The Protien To Help Them Grow To Their Full Potential, And Also Lower Protien = Decreased Egg Production When They Are Old Enough To Start Laying. It May Also Help Cannibalism If The Protien Is Low Enough. A Good Gamebird Or Turkey Starter Will Do Them Nicely!
