What do you line your nest boxes with?

Just hay, or should I use something else? I am getting some new nest boxes soon, instead of the makeshift things I have been using, and wondered what everyone does.

It seems to me as if Grandma just used hay.

Some people use straw but I see no purpose for it. I like things that serve more than one purpose. I use bermuda hay in my boxes. Not only does it make a soft pretty nest but they eat it too.

I put pine shavings down first with some diatamacious earth(sp) then the hay. The d.e. helps keep bugs out. And sometimes they kick out most of the hay. My ladies were happy with this for almost a year.but now mine have given up on nest boxes completely and all lay in one hen-made nest in the corner. After a week or two of frustration, dgd said "granma, as long as they lay, who cares where." so i'm not stressin any longer.

I use hay, cheap and plentiful around here.
When I clean the nest boxes out I throw the hay out to the cows. Instant recycling.
