What do you look for in a green peachick?

After talking to my parents about green peafowl, my dad said it might be nice to get some green peachicks.

I have a few thoughts of what they should look like...After seing pictures and reading things, I have come up with they should be darker than blue peachicks.
Then I thought they maybe would be taller, and after seeing some pictures, their head is more pointed and they have very long necks. If I eventually do end up getting green peachicks, wouldn't it be a good idea to ask to see a picture of the parents too?
Oh and what should a green peachick cost, I know they are generally more expensive than blues, and I guess it might depend on what subspecies I was getting, but could you give me just an estimate? I still have much to do before even thinking about ordering some green peachicks or anything, but I am just curious.

Minx.. a lot of people that raise greens will not sell young chicks as they will wait untill they can sex them. By then your looking at $500.00 or more a pair. That is a lot of green for a green. At times I am sure some one will sell one cheap just to get rid of it.,, just have to be there at the right time. Check with B-B in Fla. as they have imported greens which may be a little higher in price but look good. There also in the Carolinas.. I would suggest you raise blues for a while before spending that much for a skiddish bird that may break its neck the first time he gets out of the box. george

Yeah I was planning on waiting a while, raise some chicks from my own birds, then get some greens someday. I was just wondering especially because you normally don't see green chicks for sale. So aren't greens harder to breed? I guess if I had some greens I would probably not sell many and if I did I probably wouldn't sell chicks ither, so I see what you mean. Yes we visited the Rocking B-A-B Ranch around when they first got some green peafowl. The birds were still in their quarantine pen and they were very pretty. Wow $500 I thought they were $200 a pair! Thanks for the information!

If you are wanting pure java green peafowl there is a lot of effort in preserving pure java bloodlines. They are quite expensive and there is a good bit of homework you would need to do first.

If you just want a pretty green bird then I'd recomend a spalding (hybred between the java and india species) Some spaldings can look very close to java.... and generally have a much nicer disposition. Price is significantly lower as well. Same thing tho, do you homework to learn the difference in spaldings and javas

As for comparing peachicks, it really depends on the age of the chick...they change quite a bit that first year. It would also depend on the degree of java phenotype each individual chick has.

I have already done a lot of research on spaldings and green peafowl such as the differences between them, how they are different from blues, ect. Spaldings won't have as defined scaleing on the neck like a green, but some spaldings do look very close to a green, but a true green will have a green neck with barely any blue shine, and a big givaway for a spalding wound be stripes on the wings. I have seen already on a few websites birds that they are calling Javas which have the black-blue wing, but normally on the very top half of the wing you can see the brown and the stripes like on a blue but more brown. Also spaldings won't have as tight of crests or the crest feathers aren't as rounded on the ends. Then of course they don't look as thin, ect...
Also I have read about how they can be agressive and sometimes you might want to provide an area for the peahens to hide from an agressive male.

The efforts for preserving pure java bloodlines is great, I think eventually after more experiance with India blues and a few of their varients I will try to get some javas or another subspecies and try to help the cause.

I have already looked at your spalding photos millions of times because your spaldings are very pretty, they have a very nice color to them.

This has always been one my favorite spaulding pictures of yours of the father and son spaldings, both look very similar and beautiful.

Recetly I have been looking at a website that only breeds the wild type peafowl. They let their java peahens hatch and raise their own chicks and they show pictures of the nest box with the peahen sitting on the eggs and then the peahen out with the peachicks pecking around, it was really cool.
