What do you put in your chicken pen?

Just reading and lurking, and had a question about sand -- how deep, and where do you get that much sand? Wood shavings I'm familiar with, but don't know much about using sand.

you can go to any gravel/sand place and get a truck full for next to nothing or you can buy it in bags at any home improvement store. For me its the best thing ever. No smell easy to clean and the girls like to scratch/bathe in it.

Thank you all for your input on what to put in the pen.
I am overwhelmed at all the great suggestions that I
have recieved.

We have had a lot of rain pouring rain at that here lately.
For those who have clay soil you understand the mess that
clay and water can make then add chickens to the situation.

Thus far I just had dirt in my pen but that is proving to not work so
well. I just put some shaving in their pen take care of the immediate
problem of the wet clay till I could find something better. I like the idea of
sand.

How often to you change the sand in the pen? Do you take it out and add all fresh
sand or something else.

I just moved mine out to the run/coop for the first time tonight and wondered how long before they destroy what grass is left after being beat down from construction.
