What do you think of Dutch Bantams?

MidnightChickenLover, get some. You will love them!

Here is my pair...sorry for the poor quality pic, but like I said in my previous post they are staying inside at night--they were still in their crate when I took this pic. The rooster is just starting to figure out how to crow, and it is the cutest little sound ever!

He probably doesn't appreciate me laughing at him...

I am a breeder of purebred Dutch, and just love them. I breed them in Light Brown, Cream Light Brown, and Blue Cream Light Brown (as we call them here in the US.)

In most cases, Dutch cock birds are fairly easy to handle, but you will sometimes get males who are aggressive towards humans. But as Henk says, it's not a big deal, as they are small birds.

However, be aware that you generally cannot house mature males together, they will fight and sometimes kill each other. I keep my adult males penned separately. Young males can be penned together (as long as there are no females in the pen) until they reach about 6 months or so. Then they must be separated.

If anyone is interested, I have a number of birds available for sale at this time, especially Creams. I can ship all over the US (as long as it's not too hot.) Email me at lhaggarty AT blueone DOT net for more info.

Here are some pics of my birds:

Those are gorgeous birds... I never knew the roosters of that breed were that vicious to each other though.. That's a new one for me.. What if I don't have enough separate pens? What do I do then?

I have 4 roosters running together, and 2 in with 6 hens, with no fighting at all. The 4 are in with LF birds, as well, and work as a team to get everyone in the coop at night. I call them the mini Gestapo...lol. Plenty of room is probably key, though.

Dutch can be kept in cages indoors if need be, we try to build separate pens for them as possible. I do bring my males indoors during the winter to avoid frostbite.

I suppose you could try to keep them together, but I haven't taken the chance for years. Cara can speak to having one male kill another, she put a young male I shipped to her in with an established cock bird. The older bird killed the younger. Very sad.

See this pic for one of the smaller tractors we built that can hold two bantam trios (or just two males if need be):
