since I’m getting confirmation on my other thread that my four are likely all drakes, I’m looking to order babies for next week.

I was looking at the White Layers or Golden 300’s but White Layers aren’t available for a month or more.

What are your opinions on the Golden 300’s? I want friendly, good egg layers but also pets. My husband wants me to make sure they can’t fly. The chart says they can’t but want to double check.

Thanks!

I love the 300s. They are calm, really good egg layers and very pretty. Each of mine has a little different coloring so you can tell them apart. I had some white layers but couldn't give them names as they all look identical. I have Swedish, Buffs and a Pekin but the 300s are my favs.

Golden 300's are awesome birds! Mine tends to take lead frequently in the yard with all the others and she is a great layer. Like the above poster mentioned, each bird tends to have a different pattern from the next. My hen looks like a golden Swedish with white wings, very pretty!

Thanks guys! I ended up calling Metzer again and finally made my order for next week- 2 Buffs, 2 Golden 300s, 2 Blue Swedish. I’m so excited to get new babies :)

If you plan on keeping all 4 drakes you are going to need a lot more than 6 hens. Minimum you want 3 hens to a drake but with 4 drakes you'll probably want even more. Even with lots of hens you may still have issues. Drakes will fight over a single hen and it could result in her getting injured or killed. If multiple drakes try to mount her in the water they can drown her.

Yeah, we won’t be keeping them. Thank you though! I know I’d need a LOT more females and we have room for about 10 total.

We have 6 female Golden 300's and 1 Golden 300 drake. The females are very pretty, calm, a tiny bit bossy, and they can be loud. The Golden girls are our loudest ducks. The male is so pretty, he's now a charcoal color with the finest detailed pattern in his feathers and his head is turning green, like a Mallard's. We love our Golden 300's and the girls should start laying this September. Enjoy! ;)
