What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

Since yesterday there is still heat but not nearly as much as it had been and while there was still some drainage it was not as swollen either which is better than nothing right now.

Her sling/chair is 9 1/2" high 15" long, 12" wide. I adjusted according to her and what she seemed comfortable with. This is not meant for her to really walk in although she certainly can if she wants. I originally did the front lower so she could bob her head down but because I couldn't get her to readily accept any kind of harness system she was able to constantly pull herself out, therefor it was easier for everyone to just keep the front high and she is MUCH happier this way. I think there's a nesting/security feel with the sides higher. I have a small stool that is just a few inches shy of the height of her chair and is perfect to place her food and water bowls on so she can still reach them. I use the puppy training pads on the back part of the chair for when she poops but as you can see I have in some cases not been quick enough to put it on or she missed it and hit the chair instead. The fabric can be easily washed. It's soft felt on the inside and just regular leftover cotton fabric on the outside to keep the felt from over stretching. The pvc parts I actually obtained from one of those 2 part hamper kits from sears or someplace like that. I think it was like 10-15 for the kit. You can certainly get cheaper on pvc parts but that wouldn't include the wheels so this was the cheaper option for me and I was able to repurpose the mesh bags for other things so it wasn't a waste for me. The chair is not really meant as a permenant solution just for a temporary help right now. Should she need something more reliable on a constant basis (as in permenantly handicapped) then I would have to make some adjustments to this chair.

I think you did a fantastic job and thanks for the numbers.

I'm glad she's showing improvement. That is great news and it must hurt a lot less now that the pressure is somewhat relieved. Were you able to get a hold of someone at Durvet today? It would be interesting to find out what they would recommend for giving it the way you spoke of.

Thank you, it serves its purpose at least. I did call Duravet, they only have it broken down to 1 gallon and couldn't tell me what would be considered an effective amount since the instructions are just to let them drink as is. She did suggest something that they tell people who use this for chickens to add some powder from strawberry or cherry jello packet which helps to make it sweet tasting instead of bitter to hopefully increase the amount they drink. So I will try that and see if it help or I will just periodically syringe some to her through the day and hope that she's drinking enough on her own to make a difference.

Still seems about the same but I took video of her in the bath. Ignore the yellow water, I added the duramycin to it because she always drinks the bath water as it's filling and I am trying to make sure she gets as much of the stuff as possible. I'm not worried right now about her pathetic swimming attempts because her legs still hurt soooo can't expect perfection there, BUT she still gets her head stuck under her! She gets 1 niacin pill a day 100 mg and it helped because before she was not able to pull her head back up, I would have to do it for her. She still gets it stuck though but at least she's able to correct it herself after a moment of struggle this part has not improved since. Any thoughts?

Brainstorming, here, I have read that Vitamin D is important for neurological health. I don't know what a safe level of supplementation might be for her.

So proud of you for working with her!

TY Amiga, I had thought about D being possible but in the years I've had ducks I've never had it be an issue so seeing it is definitely different, especially because she didn't start out with that, it developed after her leg started having issues, although it would make sense will all she's been through for the stress to overload her and other things become pronounced. I'm a little sad to see her not preening much either. Her feathers are definitely not waterproof anymore. She loves when I preen her so at least she still enjoys it I think it's become too difficult and at this point she has to know she will always be kept safe and warm so preening may not be on the priority list...although she's a duck so really that just may be me thinking that ;) Just seemse like she tries to preen and then gives up and that's when I step in because I feel awful that she's clearly becoming frustrated. Can I help her oil her feathers in any way? Not using her oil gland since I don't think she would like that but is there something I can do to help that?

It almost looked to me as if she was preening her chest feathers while her head was under. The D may be the answer...do you ever take her outside in the sun? You can increase the niacin as well. Sydney now gets 150-200mg a day and I have seen really good improvement. Little brat walked out of her dog crate looking for me the other day, lol! She still isn't able to metabolize enough from her feed to keep it going though. Frustrating isn't it? Maybe your duck would benefit from wry neck treatment. I would have to look it up but vitamin E is one of the things. I don't know if it's an answer or just another 'let's try this', I wish I did. My thoughts are this...if you and I don't move, we do not metabolize our food intake properly and a lot of the 'good' things that come in are sent right back out. We don't need them so the body isn't going to keep them. I can't imagine ducks would be much different and another consideration with ducks or any water fowl, they take in a lot of water, niacin is a B vitamin and is excreted very quickly with water.

How is the hock looking? Does it look as if you got everything and is healing?

Looks like she is making progress in the water and such good exercise for her to build her strength.

Her hock is still swollen but not as big and not as much heat. I don't believe I got everything but progress seems to be there just a little at a time. Because I still worry about cutting something that I shouldn't I am waiting for the Tricide-neo stuff, it's ordered just waiting for it to get here and am praying that will help with treating whatever is left so I don't have to cut again.

She does get outside time although the length depends on my schedule so some days she gets hours other days less. I try to do as much outside as possible though since I know it's good for her. I think giving her vitamin D and E won't hurt at this point and if it is that then hopefully we'll see improvement. I agree it looks like she goes to preen her chest and then she loses the signal somewhere along the way (she never ends up preening her chest) I will up her niacin and see if that helps as well. Throw it all at her and hope something sticks lol.
