What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

Thanks guys. I completely agree that the dosage is too low. I did question it because both the vet tech and I thought it was way too small and the vet insisted it was right BUT when I do my own research there is no way in heck that she should be getting that little tiny bit. The vet tech I think knew something was wrong because she ended up adding a ton more to the container (there's was only about 10ml in there to begin with) and told me it's just in case and gave me a wink lol.

BRG I do not believe we have any other vets around here that treat ducks, at least that I can find and have a good reputation (this area is ripe for idiots) and unfortunately because hubby is on lay off I really can't spend any more money with them. Care Credit is a great thing but I still have to be able to pay it off in the end lol.

I have SMZs in pill form for my horses. I think I'm going to crush it and start giving her what should be the proper dose because quite honestly we are at a point that something has to give. I can't ignore the fact that she needs help but I need to be able to still provide for everyone else in this house. I do believe it started as a sprain and developed from there because I know her hocks were not hot in the beginning. They aren't as hot now as they were before going to the vet so we are seeing some improvement but oy the care she requires right now is insane. I have pain issues myself and I've been doing everything I'm not supposed to because her comfort comes before mine right now. I feel so much better hearing from others right now who are in agreement with my feelings. I know you guys are not vets and all that fun legal stuff but I really do appreciate the support.

Bickering, I have the same type of SMZs and I had just gotten it a couple of months ago, the dosage info is about the same but it changes depending on type of infection, age, and size. I am just going to follow my gut at this point because she really needs relief and soon....and so do I!
Please keep us updated on how she is. and hopefully your patience and love and extra efforts will pay off

ahh! i know its expensive im sorry but id go see another Vet! thats BS they did nothing ... you yourself could have done all that at home . i really hope she gets better . i myself have a almost 4 week old that i think sprained her leg a week ago since thats when she started limping - i feed FR since day ONE and they get Gro-gel plus so i shouldnt have to supplement w Niacin and brewers yeast but since she started limping a week ago i went to GNC and have been putting Brewers yeast in their food one time a day . and they already get 2 deep warm baths a day plus outside time ... a week ago Cookie didnt wanna walk much at all - now shes still slow but a lil better until she gets tired then her limp is more severe and she sits more .... her sisters are completely fine .... is this a sprain ... idk they cant be deficient i hope she gets better just as i hope yours does too . i told my husband to watch out we may have a house duck

BRG, one thing you have to do is keep her from using her leg so much, if she is trying to keep up with her sisters then she is probably using her leg too much, and it will take longer to heal, Just like us when we get a sprain or strain we have to rest it, use Epsom salt soaks and stay off of it as much as possible, water therapy and rest along with epsom salt soaks and Brewers yeast . And hopefully you'll notice a difference soon.

ok thanks for the advice ...she used to be the hardest one to catch and the most skiddish but now shes just relented to me picking her up to walk outside or inside and she doesnt resist anything anymore .. i think because she knows 1. she cant get away & 2. her sisters will trample her . she has been getting the Brewers yeast for a week .

Still the same so far but had her first correct dose last night so not expecting miracles. I am going to pick up just a plain niacin supplement today too. She does get niacin but it's mixed in with her other supplements so maybe it's still not enough.

I also have another weird thing that's been for a while now. She doesn't seem to like her baths AT ALL. I thought it was because she didn't feel steady but now I'm not so sure. She tries everything to get out of the bathtub, the water temp is perfectly warm not hot and she never seems happy. The only time she seems happy is if she is sitting in "her spot" which is on her memory foam mattress on the floor at my feet when I'm on the couch. If I sit in the bathroom with her it's okay but she's still not happy, tries to walk to get out of the bathroom. Any thoughts or is it just an attachment thing for her since she's all alone otherwise?

She likes to rest her head on my foot. Can't say it doesn't melt my heart every time ;)

And my daughter with Ducktor. She adores my daughter, and yes she's resting her head on her lap too.

Hopefully with upped dose you'll notice improvement soon, when she is in the warm water does she remain upright? tilt of sink? maybe she feels scared. I would continue with the water therapy though. do you have dried meal worms you might try tossing some in the water to give her some fun time.

Good thought, I do have meal worms, the ducks and chickens go nuts when they see you going for the container lol. I've tried to give her other things as treats but she doesn't seem interested. She eats her regular food like a pig though so I'll just keep offering her other things. She doesn't tilt but she does have trouble paddling. She can move her legs just seems like because they are sore she doesn't move them correctly so that may be it. She enjoyed bath time before this. I will of course continue giving her baths but I may not leave her in for an hour each time like I was before. She's lucky she's so cute and sweet lol.

yep and hour maybe a bit long, I'd be shriveled up to nothing,

Alright, one more question. Regarding the niacin, I have it in 100mg. I know I can do 1 pill to 1 gallon of water but what would the dosage be if I wanted to just give her the proper dose once a day orally so that I know she's getting the right amount instead of wondering if she drank enough water that day.

There seemed to be a small improvement today, noticed that she was able to get her head unstuck a lot easier on her own than normal. Hopefully we will continue to see improvement although her hock is still way more swollen than I would like it to be but I know that may take some time.

I have a good friend who has a Muscovy duck with leg issues and she has been giving the niacin pill straight, I have emailed her to see if she'll tell you how much and how she does it. so hang on. and yay on seeing even slight improvement.

I use the rubber feed bowls for water for my Muscovy and all I do now is take one of the pills and just drop it into the water. She finds it and gobbles it down. Niacin is a B vitamin so it's really hard to overdose your duck. I am now giving mine 1-2 of the pills a day and the improvement is marked. Hope this helps, they really do like the chance to dabble and come up with a tasty treat, lol.
