What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

Thank you so much for all the responses. She is getting supplements which include niacin. Should I be giving her just niacin separately instead?

SMZs are an antibiotic. The full name is Sulfamethoxazole. I would be really interested in what people think about the dosage the vet said which is 0.02 ml, seems like nothing.

Thank you for the support too, my heart breaks watching her because truthfully she's been so people friendly from the beginning unlike the others so I really do want to give the the chance to get better, just feel like I've hit a brick wall.
Is it SMZ or SMZ/TMP?

Here are pics of what I'm talking about. This was tonight. I cleaned as much as I could, packed it with neosporin and wrapped it which I only do at night because she gets filthy overnight and I don't want dirt getting in there. it's a light wrap so hair can still get in.

I am no expert, but that looks like pus in there, like bumblefoot in the hock. If there is pus in there, it needs to come out, but anytime if the joint space is involved, it's probably something the vet should do.

Yes that doesn't look good at all, I'd say another trip to the vet to lance and get that out of there. But being as funds are limited right now maybe something from this would help I hope so because that really looks like it's full of something. http://www.healing-from-home-remedies.com/make-a-poultice.html

Oh lots of good responses thank you! She is on SMZ/TMP and is on the correct dosage at this point, she was not however on the correct dosage with the vet so I don't know if this has created a possible resistance to the SMZ at this point. I can get my hands on other antibiotics if you think there would be something better for her at this point. She is still on Rimadyl for the pain. I already have a walker for her and while she really doesn't move around with it I try to keep her in it as often as possible to keep her off her legs and circulation flowing. It is bumblefoot but because it's on her hock it is hard to remove it without lots of bleeding towards the bottom of it, it may have to be done in stages to avoid too much loss. I do not trust the vet at this point and I cannot find any other vets in this area that treat ducks nor would my hubby who is very understanding be happy to spend more on top of the money that's already been spent. I can't blame him for that one since it's not like he didn't let me try, just ended up with a crappy vet more concerned about her wallet than anything else. I will look more into the information posted though, thank you!

Try calling a vet school or avian vet and ask them what they normally would prescribe for bumblefoot/staph infections, then see if you can buy that as a fish antibiotic. So far, the only antibiotic that I have not been able to find is Clavamox, but you can get Amoxicillin, Cipro, Ampicillin, Cephalexin for fish and Baytril for pigeons. Let me know if you need dosing info on any of those.

Speaking from personal experience, if you don't get that infection under control very soon, she will most likely lose most, if not all mobility in that joint. Just think horse with massive hock infection.

I actually have clavamox in the house already if that would be a good option. I have compared it with the horses which is why I'm trying to get the best plan in place for her because she's only got those 2 legs!

I have Clavamox tabs 62.5mg each 9 tabs left

I can get Amoxicillin, Penicillin, and Baytril easy enough if need be.

I also have Metronidazole 250mg tabs 9 1/2 tabs left, Clindamycin hcl 300 and 150 mg capsules, and of course Tylan. Baytril is typically what they prescribe here, that was what the vet originally said she was going to give and then I found out they were doing SMZ instead.

You're probably going to need a 10-14 day supply of whatever drug you decide to use. Long term use of Baytril can open the door for other very nasty infections, so it would be my last choice. Do some research on staph and what antibiotics are used to treat them. Please do let us know, it's on my very long list of things to look into, lol.
