What do you think, sick or injured 2 month pekin not getting better

That might be better, but I'm not a vet!

Casportpony, could you tell this person how you would do the extraction of the puss?
Since they have already spent a fortune with this Vet who doesn't seem to understand the needs of waterfowl, I really think she needs to see what to do at home.

In post #28, I told FCFarms exactly what I did when my duck Sydney started showing signs of the same thing, because she can't walk properly. I urge them to follow my advise. as they should see significant results within 3-4 days.

If they were to get some of the blood stop powder, I don't see how this would be a problem doing any surgery themselves. They would also want to have gauze, tape, horse wrap so if a pressure bandage was needed they could do one immediately. If some kind of intervention is not done very soon this poor little duck is going to go septic and there will be nothing that can be done. I usrge them to get this little mite onto an antibiotic now as this may give a window or time to do what is necessary to purge this from the system.

Thank you Haunted. She does have a walker already to help keep her off her feet which is perfect except she doesn't like it (go figure) I still can't get her to take the niacin from the water bowl but she will take it straight from my hand now so I give it to her that way with water right after. I plan to do the iodine and sugar poultice as soon as I can pick up the iodine, unfortunately this past week has been heck with my schedule and I haven't been able to get near the pharmacy to grab some. I should be able to get it tomorrow after my doctors appt. In the mean time I will use sugar as I know it works very well just on its own for drawing purposes hopefully we'll see some help there.

I do have the powder to help slow blood loss, I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to use in this instance since I keep it on hand for the small stuff. Her right foot seems fine now although a little odd development wise (could be from the recent issues) but it no longer seems infected and the small wound that was on her hock is healing, it's her left that is being persistent.

Casportpony did you mean the Duramycin would be better?

Do Not Use Sugar!!! This will only feed the staph!!! Just use the iodine with the vaseline. The Duramycin-10 will work, maybe not as well as the penicillian but it will work. Use it for 14 days, I would even say that you should use the 800mg dose which is 1/2 tbls. per gallon.

Okay... this is what I know about pus in poultry...

  • Antibiotics alone will_not_help, the pus needs to be removed, there is no way around this.
  • It is going to bleed, a lot.
  • It would be best to send a sample of the pus of to a state lab for culture and sensitivity testing so that the correct antibiotic can used. In CA this would cost me no more than $20.

The only bumblefoot I have treated successfully was a little duck... She had a small pin prick spot that got infected and I just picked off the itty bitty scab and squeezed the pus out. I've had a few others, two died from septicemia because I waited too long to work on them and one other is permanently crippled for the same reason. The longer one waits, the less likely they are to recover.

That said, it's time to get out the Betadine, clean the heck out of that leg and start digging. If the infection is in the joint space, the duck will probably never be the same and will probably develop severe arthritis.

I'd probably also start this duck on amoxicillin and buy more "fish-mox" so that I could give her a full 7-14 days worth.

Oye ok, my vet always had me use sugar on the horses for drawing purposes. Never to leave in it just to draw and then flush and pack with neosporin. Always worked beautifully. Is is different for ducks or different depending on the type of infection maybe?

I'll grab the iodine tomorrow, and since I can't get plain penicillin I will order the fish mox and overnight it. I feel confident I can get this taken care of and not lose her just not sure she will ever have normal use of the leg. I wish I had realized there was more going on than just the sprain, by the time it was clear it was already not good. I really wish I had been much harder on the vet to do her work. I backed off because they made it clear that if I did something they didn't "okay" that they would not see her again and I would have to find a new place. Knowing there aren't any other vets here that treat ducks I caved. I shouldn't have, she didn't do anything that made this better and I feel like I lost a week because of it. Ugh!

Any Vet that would say that to you should have their licensing revoked!!!! Not long out of school right? Look, you can do the Duramycin just as well. It does get into the smaller blood vessals in the body and will help. Lesson learned here, never trust anyone who will only treat with an ultimatum.
