What do you think the best egg layers are??

I'd guess molting or starting to go broody!

They do lay for years, but production slows as they age.

My four gold sexlinks are the most productive we have laying 6-7 large eggs a week each on average. Our two silver laced wyndottes just started laying but seem to not be quite as productive laying much smaller eggs. Our two Easter-Egger's lay about 4-5 green and blue eggs each per week.

My Golden Buff is claimed to be the "best brown egg layer" by the hatchery we ordered her from; she is indeed consistent with 7/eggs per week typically and the eggs are extra large size. My SLW lays about 6/week, not too shabby. Either way it is more eggs than we can use. They both also lay year-round with no slowing in the winter.

They are all a couple of years old and up until a few weeks ago I was getting a good amount of eggs. I haven't changed anything in their diet or anything. Maybe the heat is slowing them down, hopefully they will start laying more consistent.

The heat has slowed my flock down considerably. A month ago, we were getting 11 & 12 eggs a day.... now we are down to five and six. My BR and RIR are still giving me 3 or 4 a week but my leghorn has slowed to two a week as well as my EE. Can't wait until September and cooler weather, by then my Ameraucanas should be giving me regular blue eggs.

Edited to add... I'm going to go out to Vanessa's soon and get some Cinnamon Queens... they are regular egg laying machines!

Naked Necks - started laying at 4 months, laid all winter(a dozen a day), now molting and we are now back up to 12 one day and 8 or 9 the next. The are now a year old. Proud mama of 19 hens. Ugly, but good.
