Fed the birds in one of the coops and found one 4 month old roo on the ground with its head and neck missing and its breast and guts cleaned out,the predator also took a big dump on the nest box shelf. It's kinda hard to figure out how it got in,does anyone have any ideas about what this is?

My guess would be a coon or weasel. I'm sure some of the more experienced BYCers will chime in with some good info for you.

I say possom. He may be sleeping in the coop while your there. Check every possible hiding place. Also a possom can get in a very small opening.

Sounds like a weasel, happened to some friends of ours. They found all of the chickens dead missing the heads. What did the poop look like, that can usually tell you who left it.

It was a possum,DH shot it in the coop at 1:30 last night. He said he didn't know that chickens can clap.

Do you have a picture of this (or at least a good description) ~ I would think that this would be a good clue to the type of predator.

Oops ~ didn't see that you already got the possum.
