So I am a scared-e cat about everything, I get nervous about most thinks, and well I am kind of scared to be in my own house right now.

We live pretty far back in the sticks, animals and junk, but we have neighbors, some are our best friends, but all nice and we trust them. Recently our 9 month old boxer has been freaking out at night. When I leave to shop or etc. Sam goes out into the fenced yard cause he likes to eat the sofas. Well, I can't really handle the dog, he is hyper like no other so he stays out until Kevin gets home. Well, he has been barking at the woods a lot. I know we live out in the woods and of course we have over loads of deer and coyotes. But other things too. Kevin and I were watching a movie in our room, it was hot in the house so we had the window cracked. Well, Kevin was all wrapped up in the movie and I noticed Sam was barking like no other, I was always told it was bogger barking as if he was scared of something. Then, he stopped. Then in the silent, I hear someone whistling, then Sam starts again barking. Then stops again and then the whistle, OMG someone is in our back yard! So I tell Kevin in a quiet voice to listen, Ok I'm not crazy, he heard it too! It was like a come here whistle! Like the kind I would whistle to him to come here. So Kevin slowly gets up and heads out with a big flashlight and spots all the yard and woods, nothing that we could see. Of course we bring Sam in. Now, since Shanna, my sister in law is staying with us, someone is always home, but I am so freaked out. I mean, it's not a one time thing, it has been an every night thing. Last night, he kept running in and out of the screened patio barking like he was scared $&*!-less of something. He was honest to god scared. Then tonight, He kept barking and growling at one side of the fence near the woods, until he did the scared thing. I don't know if it's coyotes, I know dogs get very scared around them, or maybe bobcats or maybe wild boar or bear, but none can whistle! It has be so scared, but then again I am a worrier that is scared of everything.

Any ideas, cops???

Now, let me state I know we have lots of brave Coyotes! Shanna and I were feeding rabbits late one night not to long ago and I know there was at least one watching us. I could hear it. I grew up in a coon hunting family and my dad took me all the time, even if I was scared of the dark. And I know what it is like to be watch by coyotes. The soft foot steps that are always around you, but always out of sight. Then really not knowing what is watching you but you keep as calm as you can until a passing train goes by with whistle blowing and the whole woods lights up with howls, oh you don't ever forget that feeling.

EDIT: Forgot to add the neighbor to the left of us actually told Shanna that his two dogs, one out and one in, have been freaking out as well at night. They did tonight as well when Sam was barking. Shanna and me were actually out on the porch doing each others nails when it all started around dusk.

OOh creepy! Sounds like someone is trying to lure your dog away from the house for some reason.... eeek!

Can you set up a hidden game cam out there?

I guess we could, but the woods are getting so thick here we don't really have trails. I do know my mother in law her foot fall to the right of the house about a week or so ago to the right of the house.

How everything is set up it our house about 100 yards or so off the road, going up hill but a nice clear front yard. To the right THICK woods, to the left a small patch of thick woods about 50 yards wide then our Neighbor Johnny, the person with the other dogs, to the back, directly is our fenced yard, then the barn up against that to the left of the barn is our goat Morris and to the right chickens in the lower fence. The noises started at the back passed the chickens (the whistling) and then recently the barking is at the woods in between Johnny and us.

I'd be talking to the neighbor and get some kind of signals worked out and each let the other know when something is out there. Maybe even enlist some male hunter friends to stake out the area a few nights. Sounds like someone is up to no good. They have to know by now that you know they are there. Their braverly is scary,be sure to contact the local law enforcement. Good luck, stay safe and don't take chances, there are a lot of crazys out there!

Well, Kevin thinks I am over reacting, which I might be, but I am pretty freaked out, Sam is on edge too. haha I am too scared to let him out to potty at night. Anyone that is brave enough to come up to our fence at least and whistle for our very large dog has a pair. I mean, he is a baby, but he is and looks like a 90 lb beast, Johnny has a very large aggressive acting Pit bull named Tubs, now mind you he is a doll, but either way either of them will protect their homes. Which is scary to think someone has the nerve, animal or human to come up that close to the houses like that. Also, Morris our Goat is pretty mean about his 'area' so that is our other guard.

First off, I recomend the Dog Whisperer...http://www.cesarsway.com/dogwhisperer. He is why everyone asks us why our dogs are so well behaved. Second, I think game cams are the only way you will get a glimps of the whistler. It could be anything! But, as long as nothing has happened so far it could just be an animal preditor trying to get the yummy chickens and has just been scared off by the dog.
Let us know when you find out!!

That's very creepy. I'd say maybe it was a bear or some other animal they're not familiar with that has the daylights scared out of them...but that doesn't add up for one reason...animals don't whistle. If it'd been anyone you knew who wasn't trying to sneak around they'd have called your dog by name, seems like. I think the dogs know someone is up to no good. I'd light the place up like an airstrip so at least they don't have the safety of moving in the shadows. I hope the dogs stay away from them in case they toss something over the fence.

Last week some strange things happened here. It started when someone went in my rabbit barn sometime in the late day/early evening and opened 1 cage & older babies fell out or were taken out and placed on the floor. They were kind enough to re-latch 2 very hard to latch latches on the barn door when they left. Then 2 nights later someone did it again but opened all the cages except 1 and left the cage doors part way open and very neatly moved a stack of cardboard from a top shelf to the center of the floor, neatly stacked it. The padlocks went back on after that episode. Then the next night someone broke into one of the (occupied) RV's on the property, but shut the door after themselves & popped a door on another and also closed that door. I tell ya what, this place is like a fortress, literally, to begin with so it's all a creepy mystery. I had the feeling one time that someone was watching me from behind the trees, even thought I heard something at that same moment...it creeped me out and I ran outta there fast, lol. I don't go out there alone anymore after dark.

I wouldnt automatically assume it was a person... A bird of some sort may have heard you (or someone) whistle at dogs before and be copying.

We actually have a "pack" of dogs, and each has a role...

Bandit- a beagle/bluetick mix... is our watcher/ instigator... she actually lures the coyotes in for the other dogs
Chewy- a St Bernard/Pitbull mix... is the leader of the pack... friendly as can be...but brutal to racoons, coyotes, and anything else that upsets the other dogs
Princess- chewy's sister.. just as strong but HATES strangers... we actually leave her in the house all day when we are expecting a package
Roxy- is a boxer/pit mix...she is the Jaws of the family- old and crusty with a fake hip...but the other dogs run coyotes and racoons to her... a doggy sniper-one chomp/one kill
Angus - a lab/pit mix..Angus is a "special" dog... as in should be wearing a helmet... has 3 legs, likes to run under cars, thinks he can whoop chewy, and isnt afraid of ANYTHING animal-vehicle-the devil..lol
Samson- a beagle- **retired** 14 years old... sits on laps and eats tablle scraps

Anyways this motley mix of pound puppies keep themselves and us safe out here in the woods.A dog is a great addition to a rural home, 2 dogs is even better ( in my opinion)
But if you do not feel safe, by all means call the cops. or set up a tree stand.
either way a few no tresspassing signs should be put up, that way if someone does approach your dog and gets bit- you wont be liable.
it also give you more ground to stand on with the police... you can tellthem that you have already tried putting up signs (which is the first thing they will suggest)
