What do you use to entertain your chickens in your run?

I don't have my chickens yet, either, can't wait can't wait can't wait. . .

But when I had them before, I used to park their pen around the compost heap right before time to turn the heap. They gave it a good start.

We built ours a sand box, they love getting in their scratching around, taking their dust baths and also eat the sand, grit mix. Any of the yard waste, grass clippings, old flowers, garden cleanup greens etc. Everything goes into the chicken run for them to dig through. All the leaves are falling now, so the mower has a mix of grass and leaves for them.

One day I felt bad for having left the girls in the run all day (I try to let them free-range at least half the day) anyway, I stopped at the pet store and bought a bag of live crickets. I put a small hole in the bag and you can image all the fun. I think the crickets even enjoyed it - the ones that got away that is.

if only it was the poetic... it wasn't yucky, but it was fair brutal...

glad chickens are smaller than me.. vicious critters.
