What do you use to whiten a White Silkie?

A lot of folks believe that wire bottoms will break the foot feathers, and it is better to have them in deep bedding--with manure cleaned out daily, and the bedding stirred. I have a mix of pens--some with wire bottoms and others not. They each have plusses and negatives.

In your original post you asked about getting the stains out of your white silkies. Indeed, even the post title is about getting the stains out of white silkies. People are almost always trying to be helpful, and when you ask opinions, realize that you may not always agree with all the answers you get. But asking questions is how we learn. Taking offense at an answer and seeing mean criticism at every turn will not be helpful to you in the long run. I've known and read Glenda's advise for eight or ten years on one list or another. She has a huge amount of wisdom about poultry that she is always willing to share. And I have never known her to be mean or pick a fight. Please expect that people are trying to be helpful.

I have Wire - and do not use anything else except for their ground time --- To whiten I use woolite and never anything with Blue

I have seen some awesome birds in TN get Beat cuz they had a blue tint to them and it is too long of a grow out process- I put a little bleach in the water also and wash with Baby Shampoo - Baby shampoo is a what works for me ----

Glad ya had a good time at the show

as I explained the bleach has to be a minute amt like 1-10 parts bleach and water and then only put it mixed on the yellow part with cotton and not leaving it there very long
it will make the feathers be stiff and break

so try one of the woolite posts that was offered
personally I doubt if any thing gets the yellow cast out of the feathers

showing white birds is a trick at best as it requires daily cleaning and keeping the birds clean in the bedding dept

also that is why you didn't find many silkies shown

what show was it and how is the show girl different than a regular silkie

Was those pictures you posted show girl silkies?

I was under the impression they have a trait that is different from regular silkies

When you show chickens at purebred shows you have to have a "thick skin" as people will call it like they see it and really not mean to hurt your feelings

every one always feels their birds are best and some times they are

I showed cochin frizzles for many yrs and helped people with stock to get them to show against mine
so may be that is what you will have to do

give your friends some chicks and let them learn to show against you

Winning in a chicken show is in the quality of breed stock and the CONDITIONING of the birds
Conditioning is a 24-7 prokect

What is good conditioning for birds from day one

I always tell folks Good Feed, Good water, & good housing. This is the following advise:

GOOD FEED Well I would advise having a protein enriched feed and more people than not like a animal protein instead of the new vegtable protein such as Purina and Blue seal have in their layena

That makes them feed additives a lot Which I am in agreement that a good probiotic (natural) is best.
this I would give thtis recipe to use on all birds for good conditioning
1 qt crumbles
2 qts of Buttermilk or sour milk
to sour a gallon of milk add 4 tbsp of apple cider vinegar
keep remaining sour milk in refrigerator
1/2 cup of yougart
mix at least once week for life of birds.

GOOD CLEAN WATER WITH ACV
When using medication don't use the Apple Cider vinegar in water Other time daily use 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar ( not chemical vinegar) to each gallon used daily As to the water it is best to make fresh at least once a day the ACV keeps the greens out of the water, another reason to use.

GOOD CLEAN HOUSING
for example Old English it is best not to use pens where the birds male and female can back into the wire
they ruin feathers for showing when doing this. Makes them ragged. Don't crowd birds up too many to a pen

also seperate cockerels to them selves at least by 4 months away from the pullets. As they tend to run the pullets down in the back when constantly mounting them

FEED SUPPLIMENTS
As to additives I am a believer in the natural ones
Kelpa from day one, garlic, Diatomaceous earth, Fish meal

2%, For 25 pounds of feed, it's 25 x .02 = .5 or 1/2 pound of DE. If you don't have a scale, a one cup measuring cup holds 5 ounces of DE. You can't over-dose. Better too much than too little!

Kelp makes a good additive from day one as it makes good feather quality and condition on feathers.

any questions email me

Yep the hen in the pic is my showgirl.

I was the only with th showgirl, there is another that showed a showgirl at others but not this one.

Lots of good advice, Glenda! There is one thing that gets rid of yellow feathers...a molt

Showgirls are a cross between a naked neck and a silkie--the idea is that of a stereotypical Las Vegas Showgirl with the big pouffy fans. Some of them are many generations into development.
