To me it means being as independant as possible. I got away from it while I was working but now that I'm retired and not on much money I need to do what I can to save money. I have also become concerned about the food supply. A disfunctional government is probably not protecting the food supply as it should. I think we need to grow as much of our own as we can and get the rest from local people whom we know. Shop locally and buy American. The farther away we get the less we know about things. I'd like to be able to produce my own electricity but the best I can do is minimize usage. I let the sun in in winter and keep it out in summer. I try to stockpile some things but I tend to forget and there are things you can't keep long term. You can fill up a freezer but what happens when the electricity is off for a long time. As someone already said even the farmers a long time ago didn't live completely self sufficiently. They still had to buy things like coffee and flour. The pioneers here in the 1800's didn't grind their own flour. Someone always set up a mill. But they did produce what they couldn't get or did without until they could get it. They didn't have to worry about electricity because there wasn't such a thing.
The farmers here didn't get electricity until the 1920's or 30's. Before that they milked the cows by hand and had a windmill to pump water. There was a reason those people had so many children.
