What does it physically feel like to cut a chickens head off?

Thank you! The feathers are definitely something I'm concerned about. I don't want to be mid-cut and get hung up on some feathers. Do the feathers have to be moved for the ax or is that not necessary? I'm also wondering, how much force does it take to kill a chicken with an ax? I know it takes a good amount of force, but I am not that strong at all, so I'm wondering if it might be too hard for me or if it's easy enough anyone can really do it?
The feathers can be really difficult, espec on birds like Duck, that have so much feather. I have never felt I am good at "pulling" the neck, so gruesome as it sounds I "try" to pull the neck, but at same time, twist neck right round and cut throat with the sharpest thing I can find. That said I am 5ft and nearly.70...and its male Muscovy Ducks I am usually trying to dispatch. As someone.said IF you are going to do it u have to commit...its not fair on the animal otherwise. I Once tried to do this to a huge male when I had the flu...I honestly thout he was going to win! I admit.I had to give up...2 yrs later he STILL keeps his distance!( Hadn't the heart to try again)

I’m an itty bitty person (5’0”) and have decapitated chickens and ducks using a kitchen cleaver without any strength issues. Like @svh said, don’t hesitate. Make your cut with confidence. Afterwards it’s ok to need some deep breaths. And remember even if you don’t have anybody physically there with you for moral support, we’re here for you.
Yes...anyone that says they "like it" or don't mind is very sick in the head...but sometimes its the only option

So my dad used to finish off a pheasant by just holding it by the neck and doing a rapid spinning motion. Not overhead like he was rallying at a ball game or anything like that. Is that not a thing with chickens?

I'm not sure of the details of what you are talking about but there are many different ways to kill a chicken. Some people break the neck, that may be what your dad was doing.

If it works with pheasant I'm sure it will work with chickens. And I'm sure someone will tell you how it is cruel or inhumane, like they do with any of the other methods we use. As long as it is quick and sure I consider it acceptable. If the spinal chord is severed (as it probably is) then no pain messages are going to the brain.

In the spirit of acquiring knowledge to be more prepared for the day I have to perform my first cull, I've read this entire thread and I appreciate the sincerity and sensitivity in responses for such a delicate subject. The thought of taking a life is not pleasant. @aart, I am unable to play the videos - you tube presents with a blank "not available". Do you have any suggestions or another link? I don't know why I can't get the video to play. Thank you.
