What does 'Paper & Pencil Skills Assessment' mean to you?

BF is in the running for a few jobs at a large software company - this current round involves a "paper and pencil skills assessment".

The jobs (he is trying for three open positions) are 1. Technical Writer, 2. Proposal Writer, and 3. Project Manager.

I'm thinking it's most likely some editing and spelling 'quizzes' and the like - what do you all think? Google isn't be the most helpful right now.

It could be some editing...maybe some multiple choice questions asking how he would react in particular situations (for management)...

For the latter two jobs, I would say he will have to demonstrate his ability to come up with ideas and suggestions on the fly. As in, here is a potential client with Problem X, come up with a technical solution our company can provide. On the first one, it's probably more like the editing & spelling questions.
