Well, I'm a word geek (technical writer/editor), so it really is Greek to me! But super fun. I have a couple of color projects up my sleeve, but this pattern stuff really boggles my little mind...I think blue laced red cochins would be just awesome, though! And I'm thinking that you already have all of the genes you need--you wouldn't have to outcross to anything else to get the color--so type shouldn't suffer. I know that the mille fleur folks not only have to work on color, but also are having to work on getting back to good cochin type.

I was told this weekend at the show I went to that patterns are the hardest to work on, let alone perfect...but type comes first.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE CALCULATOR!!!

According to the calculator, I will get 2 birds in the 2nd generation that are the right color

(assuming I breed at least 64!!!) Good thing the rest of them should all be pretty & fluffy too! Think I'll have a hard time finding homes for the blue laced blue?? That sounds neat!

And this all coming from the person (me) who only has a few cochins - all hatchery - right now. Needless to say, I'm trying to find a good standard GL cochin breeder. I can find plenty of B/B/Ss!

Oh, and I just saw that RareFeathers has GL cochins...

I'm thinking some other genetics must have been going on with the splash hen? Was it a B/B/S hen?

And if Sumatra started with a blue-ish black, then perhaps back crossing (not sure to what at this point) would have lightened it to blue. In a generation or two.

So, like Maria said, I have access to good types. NOw to get the color! BLR is such a *soft* pattern...I'd love to see it on a cochin!

RareFeathers - we posted at the same time. I was just noticing in your siggy that you have GL cochins...just as you were *mentioning* that

And I also see that you are working towards creating the BLRCs. LOL - I'll work on the east coast flock

WHen will your GLCs be available?

If the Splash male is Extended Black, homozygous Blue,& gold E/E Bl/Bl s+/s+ ( could be masking other genes, & possibly Silver & we won't know) is mated to a Gold Laced hen that is Brown, Gold, & has the lacing combination of Columbian,Melanotic,& Pattern gene eb/eb s+/- Co/Co Ml/Ml Pg/Pg, & Blue Bl/bl+ we would get all blue chicks, that may have some gold/red tones breaking through,E/eb Co/co+ Pg/pg+ Ml/ml+ Blbl+ s+/- . Mating either of these F1s back to the Gold Laced will produce 5 phenotypes, Black, Gold Laced, Blue Laced Gold, solid Blue & Laced Blue. Quality of lacing will be variable. This will need to be a big hatch.
If the best Blue Laced Gold are then bred back to Gold Laced you will get 50% each Gold Laced & Blue Laced Gold, lacing should by now be as good as the lacing on the original Gold Laced birds used.
