I was wondering if anyone out there actually knows what pool grade DE looks like. I know that the processing is quite different than that of food-grade so I'm guessing that that the appearance is different as well. My feed store sells DE and when I asked them if it was food grade they said they didn't know but insisted that it was "animal safe". I bought it but am reluctant to use it until I'm sure that it is indeed food grade. It's really powdery and whitish.

Thanks!

I have a pool with a d.e. filter and I use food grade d.e. for my animals. The stuff I buy from the pool store has the instuctions on it for how much to add to a pool filter (at least the brand I buy does) and it states on the bag that it is for use in swimming pools.
The food grade d.e. states on the bag that it is food grade. I have a pic of the pool de but I don't have the bag for the food grade de. If you look into the bags, the products look the same. They are the same color, same texture, and neither one has a odor that is distinct.

hope this helps

oooooooohhhhhh!

I didn't know they looked the same! That makes it scary. I have the food grade- mine comes in a white bag with dogs and cats all over it and says Food Grade at least 3 times.

jthayerkatz-Thanks so much for the reply and going through the trouble of posting a pic of the pool grade DE.

The feed store said that it didn't indicate "food grade" on the bag when I asked them. They repackage it and sell it in smaller quantities so I have no idea what the original bag even says. They do sell a good deal of it, mostly to customers who have horses and I haven't heard anything about bad things happening to them. It is kinda scary though that the pool stuff looks the same.
