This chick hatched yesterday. Basic info: dad is silkie, mum is probably silkie (might be australorp x but it'd be weird if a australorp hatched such a small chick). Chick is half the size of the other chicks, not fluffy and has an enormous head. Photos attached of body and feather type, as well as another chick for reference. My hand is the same size and both chicks are day old in the photos.

Thoughts? If someone showed me this chick and said it was a quail I would believe them. I've never seen one look like this before.

I think It is just a waiting game with your little one. You description sounds like he had a little yolk stuck and it has dried on him. It takes my chick 36+ hours to fully fluff up though.

Update: chick has started developing bald spots. (And is also still not fluffy, so it'd be pretty unlikely it's dried yolk, since it's been...4 or 5 days now?) Should I call the vet & get an opinion? Squid (chick's name) is as active as the other chicks, and hasn't shown any signs of illness that I could see - I've been away most nights since they were born so I haven't been able to observe much. Mum, squid and two other chicks are on their own now two, just in case it's some sort of illness.

If seeing a vet is an option and you're concerned, that'd be a good idea. Please keep us updated with little Squid 💜

I think your baby is fine from the pictures, I had a balding chick too but now she’s huge and healthy and has all her feathers.
it’s hard to see on her at this age but she had a nearly fully bald back and stomach and a few bald patches on her wings.

All I did was wait it out and keep her under the heat longer then the others, she just hatched with less feathers, I don’t know why but it didn’t effect her, she is totally fine now and very healthy.

How is she/he looking now? She/he should be more feathered out now right?
