Hen picking up pieces of straw and laying them on her back? Is this just broody behaviour? I have never seen this before .

I read that in a forum a couple days ago. They said that she is going broody.

It doesn't have to mean anything. Sometimes they just do it.

I think she wants a hula skirt.

My mom's does that with pine needles and sometimes puts pine cones next to her eggs... such a cutie! she seems to have to have her nest look and feel a certain way before she will lay!

They can do that for a number of reasons. In my experience, they do this when they are laying or when they are broody.

Both of my Red Stars do this as they are laying! It's funny to watch. They just sit there and pick up the pine shavings and place them on their backs or around themselves...then in just a little while...ploop...an egg! Then they just get up look at the egg and walk off!
