I just looked at my alerts and I have a star on several up to 32 mins ago.

If you haven't looked at it the star will be there even if it's been days since the alert came in. If you've looked at it, it goes away.

I think it might go away like 10 minutes after viewing the alert, not 10 minutes after the alert was received.
